Old Fashioned Apple Pudding Cake
Good morning, lovelies! I hope y’all are having a wonderful week! This past weekend, I made an old fashioned Apple Pudding Cake for Sunday dinner dessert. Oh my, it is delicious! In fact, this cake is so good I made it again, so I could share the recipe with you! 🙂 I have no clue why it’s called “pudding,” but we’ll just go with it. 😉 This apple cake recipe reminds me {and my family who enjoyed it} of an apple cake that Memaw used to make. Precious memories.

Mixing up an apple pudding cake is super quick and easy. And the vanilla sauce that is poured over it is literally the “icing” on the cake. 😉 You will want to eat the entire cake yourself, trust me. Ahem.
Old Fashioned Apple Pudding Cake
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 5 medium apples, cored and grated {leave the peel on!}
- 1/3 cup chopped nuts {walnuts or pecans}
Sift all dry ingredients together in a bowl. Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs and beat. Fold in grated apples and nuts. Bake in a greased 13 x 9 baking dish for 25 minutes at 400 degrees.
*Note: I use my food processor and have the apples grated in no time. Easy peasy!
Vanilla Sauce
- 1 stick butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup milk {I use coconut milk, but any milk is fine.}
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
- 3 dashes ground nutmeg
- 1 1/2 tablespoons powdered sugar
Melt butter, sugar and milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Increase heat to medium high and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. Add vanilla and nutmeg. Then add powdered sugar to slightly thicken. Beat out any lumps with a whisk. Pour over warm cake. Let it soak in. This sauce is like I said, the “icing” on the cake. Yum!
Serve warm or cooled down. Either way is delectable!

I bet you won’t be able to stop with the first piece. 😉 Yep. It’s THAT good! Here are a few other delicious apple recipes that we love!
Do you have a family favorite recipe that brings back sweet memories?

is it suppose to be so dry when you put it in the oven? i didn’t alter the recipe at all so I hope it comes out as yummy as it looks!
Deb, I’ve made this many times and the batter isn’t dry. The vanilla sauce is a great addition. I hope yours turned out!
it was tasty but it reminded us more of baked oatmeal. when you put the batter in the pan to bake it wasn’t batter consistency was it? mine was dry, I kind of patted it into the pan. 2 eggs and 1 stick of butter isn’t much ‘liquid’ to absorb 2 c of flour is it? the vanilla sauce was yummy on it!
I have no idea why yours turned out that way. The apples provide a lot of moisture too. I just made it again today and the cake is exceedingly moist.
I love old recipes and especially ones that remind us of favorite dishes made by family members! Sounds just perfect.

Silly question but what kind of apples taste best when making this? Thanks, this sounds delicious!
I’ve used a mix of gala, golden delicious and macintosh. 🙂
I made this last night and everyone loved it! It was moist and flavorful. Plus, it made the house smell great. Definitely a “make again”.
Apple pudding is one of my favourite deserts. I don’t know how to make perfect pudding yet, but you make it possible thanks. I’ll try for sure.
It must be delicious. I’m not very good at baking on my own, because the best bakeries help us out a lot https://mediaonemarketing.com.sg/top-bakeries-singapore/. I have a sweet tooth, so I always like to have something to eat for tea. In addition, the pastries are always delicious and fresh, which can not but please
