Woodsy Glam Christmas Home Tour 2013
Welcome, y’all! The Christmas Tour of Homes this week has been a-may-zing with so much fabulously festive eye candy! If you’re visiting for the first time from I Heart Organizing, I am overjoyed that you are here! Jen’s tour is just beautiful. I’m thrilled to be participating this year, so grab a cup of coffee or wassail and settle in for a tour of our little cottage in the country.
For those of you who may not know, we moved into my late-Memaw’s house three weeks ago. Don’t worry. I’m not going to show you the missing baseboards or stacks of boxes in the hall…just the pretty stuff today! We’ve been working to update and renovate over the last few months, but I’ve hit the Christmas decorating pretty hard since Thanksgiving. I’m calling this year’s theme “Woodsy Glam”. C’mon in and I’ll show you around!
[pinit count=”horizontal”]
Come in the front door and the first thing you will see is my insanely quick and easy Christmas wreath. I made it out of…wait for it….a thrift store plaid skirt and two snowflakes. We keep things super fancy around here…or not. *wink* I used sewing pins to attach the fabric strips, so I can take them off at any time. Boom.
To the left is the living room. It has a quirky conglomeration of furniture and accessories, but I love it SO much. My Memaw’s Duncan Phyfe sofa is the star of the show. I just added a snow flake pillow and called it good. This is our first Christmas without our beloved Memaw, so I decided to decorate the tree with all of her tree decor from years past. Memaw’s tree stood for many years in this same spot, so it’s pretty sentimental for our family. The colored lights, handmade ornament, gold tinsel garland and non-shatter-proof ornaments go perfectly with the vibe I’m feeling this year.
I’m totally smitten with plaids this year, so I hit up the thrift store for all sorts of plaid clothing to make my DIY Tartan Plaid Bunting. It’s a super easy tutorial!
You can’t really see them well, but I decorated the piano very simply with my DIY Book Page Trees from last year. They are my favorite!
See the tree skirt? It is literally an old plaid skirt that I’ve had in my closet for many years. I haven’t worn it in FOREVER and it looks much more fashionable around the tree. Ha!
From the front door, the dining room is on the right with an opening into the den. We opened up the wall and created the cased opening. It was a risk, but I can’t even tell you how thankful I am that we did it. The flow of this space is simply marvelous and perfect for hospitality.
I love our dining room benches from World Market. They are perfect for kids…and for packing people around the table for holiday meals! 🙂
I dressed the table with two old grain sacks and a thrift store skirt that I cut in half as table runners. No sewing. I just folded and ironed. See? I told you we were super fancy. Gold chargers and studded napkin rings bring the glam while the plaids and grain sacks give it just enough rustic-ness.
I strung a few blingy red beads on the chandelier and I hung up this lovely Moravian star that I found at Pier 1. So pretty!
I used my Memaw’s old green silver chest {She used it for stationery.} to give height to the centerpiece. I’m a huge fan of layering, so I added a felt snowflake and a white hobnail vase with fresh {free} cuttings of greenery and berries. LOVE it.
My apple green desk is also in the dining room. It’s such a fun piece of furniture to decorate!
My antique stove board that I found at a yard sale anchors this Christmas vignette.
The Merry Christmas sign is from Target’s dollar spot.
Isn’t the footed bowl of ornaments fun? The large red pitcher full of greenery is great for Christmas too. Swoon.
The dresser that I made into a buffet is also on the same very long wall as the apple green desk and the piano. I decorated it with my HUGE mason jar filled with fresh greenery and berries. I’m smitten with that jar. It’s such a conversation piece.
The little Target bird isn’t too bad either. Love his scarf!
I made a very simple s’mores bar on the buffet. You can’t go wrong with s’mores. Now that we live in the country, having a fire in the back yard is pretty normal. Of course, I had to add another plaid bunting and the gold dots from my friend Shelley are just plain fun!
That’s a wrap on the Christmas decor in the living room and dining room!
Oh wait! Here’s one last photo with some amazing, colorful bokeh! Ahh!
Next, we are headed to the den where the fireplace anchors the space. It’s a wonderful focal point!
I whitewashed the brick and made over the gas logs insert back in September. It was fun to decorate this spot for Christmas. Be sure to check out my Christmas mantel post for all the juicy details!
The rocking chair and quilt were Memaw’s. The rocker squeaks, but that makes me love it even more. 🙂
One thing you will notice is our desperate need for window coverings, but that is a discussion for another day. 😉 I added Christmas pillows to the sofa and a little greenery here and there. Nothing terribly fancy.
I just had to include this photo of my big boy playing Merry Larry {the new Christmas Veggie Tales app}. Adorable. The Christmas candle centerpiece decorated Memaw’s coffee table for as long as I can remember. She always had candles in it, but that would never work with my rowdy crew.
The kitchen renovation is *almost* complete, but I’m saving that for another day as well. You won’t believe the difference that cleaning, paint and trim made to these kitchen cabinets. Click to see the before and after as well as a quick tutorial on updating kitchen cabinets on a dime.
To spruce up the kitchen for Christmas, I simply hung glittery snow flakes with red checked ribbon on the upper cabinets and I added more vinyl gold polka dots to the soffit. 🙂
Before you go, I want to show you one last space. This is the view from the back door. We use this area every single day for coats, hats, scarves, keys, phones, chargers etc. It helps keep those things decently organized.
I spruced up the DIY Drop Space with some greenery, jars of buttons and Christmas books.
The set of encyclopedias and little chalkboard/corkboard have been in this place forever. The encyclopedias are now my dad’s, but I’m storing them for him. I love decorating with my old cigar box. The colors are so festive.
And here’s the back door decorated with a wreath that my sister and I made Memaw many years ago. What wonderful, sweet memories we have and there are many sweet memories in the making! Thank you SO much for stopping by and taking the tour of our little cottage in the country! 🙂
Merry Christmas from our home to yours!
xoxo

Myra,
I love your “Woodsy Glam” look for the holidays – especially all of the plaid elements!! I so enjoyed the home tour and seeing how you have transformed your grandmother’s home, keeping the sweet memories, and yet making it your own. Thanks for the inspiration….. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!
Blessings,
Lanita
You’re so talented! Very warm & cozy & welcoming! A real home! Spotted lots of items that were in our home when I was growing up. I would never have kept them, but now I’m wishing I had. 🙂 You have the touch!
Miss M. ! Well done! I love the tasteful simplicity and the layering of color, textures and whimsy! My favorite picture is of your Wee Boy. What a sweetheart. My own boys watched the very first Veggie Tales when they first came out and I still find myself singing, “Oh WHERE is my (hairbrush)?”, when I’ve misplaced something. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and for sharing your fantastic home.
Merry Merry,
Melanie
I love your home. I also have a Duncan Phyfe but it needs to be reupholstered. The reason I love your home is because it is truly different from what is seen everywhere on the net. Just so lovely.
I love yaw’s home. My dad used to put a deer head on top of our tree, and we’d just put the blinking star in his mouth that had fallen open (taxidermist didn’t do a very good job).
Your home is looking very beautiful. Each and every thing is fantastic in itself. It has just captivated me.
Wow! Your decor is absolutely stunning! Love your home.
I finally got a chance to take a minute and look through the home tour. I really love how you brought out the beauty of certain areas but maintained the classic look of the home!!! Thank you, I really enjoy your posts.
