Chewy & Delish 5-Layer Bar Cookies
Good morning, beautiful people! I hope y’all are having a fab week. Mine has been pretty quiet. Moving to the country has made me even more of a homebody. I’ve been busy unpacking boxes and I’m *trying* to get the bedrooms unpacked this week. I’m also working on making treats to give to family and friends. I pulled out Memaw’s old Cotton Country cookbook from 1972 and I found a recipe that I wanted to try. Of course, I modified it just a bit because that’s how I roll.

I’ve made these Chewy & Delish 5-Layer Bars twice and my family gives them rave reviews. They aren’t sickly sweet. They are chewy…kind of caramelized…and they have a really nice sweet and salty flavor. I make mine in my Pampered Chef bar pan, but you can also use a 13×9 baking dish. It may need a few extra minutes of bake time, just because the bars will be thicker. 🙂
Chewy & Delish 5-Layer Bars
- 12 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- 2 cups shredded coconut
- 8 ounces Heath chips {You could also substitute chocolate chips. The next time I make these I’m going to try Heath chips and chocolate chips.}
- 1 1/2 cans sweetened condensed milk {Oh hush! I didn’t tell you these bars were healthy!}
- 1 cup chopped nuts {Pecans are my preference.}
Turn the oven on to preheat at 350. Place butter in your bar pan or baking dish. Put the pan in the oven and let the butter melt. Remove from oven.
Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs evenly over melted butter. Then top with a layer of coconut, Heath chips, sweetened condensed milk and nuts.
Bake for 20 minutes if in a bar pan and 25 minutes if in a baking dish.
Remove when golden brown and cool completely before cutting and serving.
I like to trim off the crispy edges to snack on later so that the bars are pretty and even.
Enjoy!
Happy Christmas Baking!

We call these Magic Cookie Bars and they are my husbands all time favorite at Christmas time! 🙂 Merry Christmas!
We have made these for years too and love them… I have even sprinkled cranberries on them for a variation 🙂 Love how super quick they are… Have a fabulous day, Myra!
So easy! I could almost make these one-handed while holding the baby! Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

We made those a lot when the cookbook was new. Yummy! Have you been able to get gluten-free graham crackers?
