Colorful & Easy Birthday Party {Cameron’s 1st Birthday!}
Good morning!! If you follow me on Facebook and Instagram you likely saw that we celebrated Camerons’s first birthday this past weekend. I wanted to make his first birthday special and memorable without going over the top.
Instead of a “theme” party, I went with a colorful and easy scheme of fun and happy colors. The stars of the show were the paper goods and glass mugs with tin lids and paper straws … well, and Cameron of course! 🙂

I snagged most of the party paper goods from a great Zulily bundle sale a few months ago. I was smitten with the patterns and colors. I just found the plates, napkins, banner and hats on Amazon too, if you’re looking for them.
How cute are the party hats?! The kids loved wearing them.
I baked black bean chocolate cupcakes with homemade buttercream frosting. They were SO good! I made a little flag for Cameron’s cupcake with a bamboo skewer and Washi tape.
The paper straws were so fun and party-ish! I got some from Zulily and some from Amazon.
The cupcake stands don’t match, but at least they are both white. 😉 It was so easy to decorate with simple things like Washi tape, skewers, twine, crepe paper and ready-made tissue paper fans.
Because I do many different events, when I saw the metal lids on sale at DecorSteals a few months ago, I bought three dozen. I love their vintage vibe and they are perfect with glass pint mugs for kids…fewer spills!
I hung the birthday banner and paper fans in the living room window. We live in a town house, so natural lighting is hard to find. I also moved the kitchen table to the living room for the dessert and drink table. It worked!
The table didn’t have anything super fancy on it, but the bright colors and made all the difference in the world. Oh, and the mugs! I recently ordered three dozen pint mugs from Amazon {with Amazon credit, holla!} to go with the metal lids. Surely, they are the best investment ever. Everyone loves drinking from a pint mug with a metal lid and paper straw!
I wanted to do a craft and a game to involve the older kids, so we did colorful symmetry art. I had all the pieces of paper folded in half with everyone’s names already written on them. The adults went around and helped the kids with dribbling two colors of paint in the folded crease. Then the kids closed the paper and pressed the paint around. Then they opened their papers to see the symmetrical pattern that they created. It was really fun!
I sort of planned for the artwork to be part of the party decor, so I had a piece of twine ready to clothespin the art to so they could all dry during the rest of the party.
We played Pin The Tail On The Donkey, with a very vintage donkey. It is from my dad’s side of the family circa 1950. I made some new tails out of construction paper and the kids stuck them on with double sided tape. 🙂
Ridley had a fun time at the party!
My brilliant friend Emily gave me the great idea of doing a baked potato bar for the party food. Seriously. Best idea ever! It was so easy to cook beef brisket in the crockpot with bbq sauce overnight and then throw potatoes in the oven an hour before the party started. We had sour cream, butter, cheese, onions, parsley, salt and pepper and more bbq sauce for toppings. This easy meal got rave reviews!
The kids played and played. It was really cute. And yes, my front door needs to be painted thanks to the glaring hot Western sun.
The birthday boy!
This kid makes me smile so many times each day. He got all shy when we sang “Happy Birthday” to him. He put his head over on his Grandpa’s shoulder. Seriously. How cute is that?!
He pretty much LOVED his first ever cupcake.

The aftermath. There were just two cupcakes left. It was a really fun, easy-going, simple party that everyone seemed to enjoy.
Can you believe that Cameron is one? It seems like just yesterday that I was telling you his birth story! Time flies!
Do you like theme-y or non-theme-y birthday parties? Or a mix of both?

Simple and easy parties are the best! Can’t believe your little one is now a year old– seems like just yesterday he was ‘nesting’ in your belly at Haven. 😉
What a fun and cute party – you knocked it out of the park. And what a cute birthday boy! I love the picture of the adults sitting around and the kids on the floor. How typical is that in everyone’s home for any given party! Oh and the vintage pin the tail on the donkey game… very cool. Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide
