Where I Live {Favorite Places}

Y’all, know by now that I’m a Southern girl through and through.  There is something about living in the South that is just completely warm, welcoming and just…home.  I’ve had the opportunity to travel to many different states and Canada which I love, but there’s no place like sweet home Alabama.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center

My completely unbiased opinion {haha} is that North Alabama is a bit of heaven on earth. You won’t meet sweeter people anywhere. The most brilliant engineers {I’m married to one!} and rocket scientists reside here and work in various industries, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command and Redstone Arsenal.

I was raised on a farm in a sweet, little hollow surrounded by my family that was just close enough to town to be convenient, but enough in the country to enjoy the quiet, the crickets and the beautiful stars at night.  I wish I could take each of you there. It’s so amazing!

Needless to say, we love where we live. It’s home. I thought it would be fun to join in Kate’s party and show you some of my favorite places around here.

Old State Bank in historic Decatur

Historic Decatur is one of my favorite areas. The antique shops and historical homes {Alabama’s largest collection of Victorian homes} are so charming and inspiring. The ReStore is close by and several thrift shops!  Love it!

The Bank Street Antique Mall is a three story shop full of amazing treasures. I could shop there for hours.  Want to come and go antiquing with me?

We love this park by the Tennessee river. It is usually cooler with the river breezes and there’s shade to enjoy too!

Southern Accents in Cullman is a place that you don’t want to miss if you come to Alabama.  They are a wonderful salvage store that has an in-house wood working shop.  Cool stuff!

For date nights or girl’s night out, I love to go to Bridgestreet Town Center in Huntsville. The shopping is normally out of my price range, but the restaurants are delightful and the ambiance of Bridgestreet is phenomenal.  You can even take a gondola ride. 🙂

My sister and I took our kiddos to the splash pad at Bridgestreet recently and they had the best time!!

Last, but not least, I recently discovered Sweet CeCe’s at The Village of Providence with my friends Aubrey and Dedra.  I’ve never had more delicious frozen yogurt.  Seriously. If there’s a Sweet CeCe’s near you, go check it out! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed a mini tour of a few of my favorite places around North Alabama!  It’s one of the best places on earth! If you’re ever in the area I would love to meet up with you at a thrift shop or for some Sweet CeCe’s! 🙂

What is your favorite place where you live?

  1. I love North Alabama too! We lived in Fayetteville Tn, just over the state line for several years and visited Huntsville and the surrounding area a lot. Do you ever go to Sir’s Fabric in Fayetteville? I really miss that place! Thanks for the tour!

  4. Fun! The antique mall reminds me of some of the spots we have in the “old towne” area of my town. It’s a blast to window shop, but the prices at ours are set for tourists, sadly. 🙁 Now, the Restore, that’s something else! It looks like you all have a lot of fun things to keep you busy! Visiting from Centsational Girl today. 🙂

  5. It is really fun to recognize some of those places that we passed on our way to your house! You and your family were the best example of southern hospitality, and the farm was fun!

We need to come back and spend more time. Those thrift stores look amazing!! Nothing like that in my neck of the woods.

  6. It looks beautiful! I love people that take pride in where they are from and where they grew up…..they are usually the most genuine people that aren’t always looking for greener grass, they are content. That’s a beautiful thing these days in our fast food world where we get what we want, when and how we want it. Thanks for sharing!

  7. This is definitely home sweet home! We love Bridge Street as well, although I don’t get over there near as much as I’d like to. And they opened up a Sweet CeCe’s in Hampton Cove (which is only 8 miles from my house!) a few months ago…….um, let’s just say the kids ALWAYS beg to stop when we go by. 🙂 We actually love all the little yogurt shops they’ve opened up in the past year or so around town. You’ll have to check all of them out, you know just to compare! lol Thanks for sharing all the pics……it was fun seeing some places around here that I didn’t even know about.

  8. I agree. Wouldn’t want to live anywhere else! But let’s just keep it between you and your 5000 friends, ok? hee hee 🙂

  9. I was born in Northern Alabama, but my Dad got a job with GM and we had to move to Michigan when I was 4 years old. Still have lots of relatives around Birmingham. Love Alabama and all of the Southern States. Michigan is also a beautiful state with lots of water, lakes, etc. Lucky you to live in such a wonderful area, enjoy!

  10. I follow you on facebook but I had no idea you where a Southern girl! I live in Tuscumbia, (Northwest Alabama) and call all of North Alabama home. You are absolutely right…the lines have fallen for us in pleasant places! ~Blessings

  11. I lived in Courtland for a year when I was a teenager! It was one of the best years of my life! Can’t beat Southern
    Hospitality!

  12. I need to get TeriLynneU here for a day and we’ll meet up at BridgeStreet! I live in SE Huntsville and love seeing the Saturn Rocket everyday when we top the hill. My husband (aka Rocket Man) is also an engineer.n

    1. Yes, Yes, Yes! 🙂 We will have to meet up! I worked in Huntsville for three years…the 45 minute commute one-way was a beast. 🙂

  13. Hey Myra!
I really enjoyed your pictures of Alabama. I lived about an hour and forty five minutes away from Huntsville about 14 years ago. I use to love visiting Cullman ~ especially the Octoberfest! Is the restaurant still there that makes the famous orange rolls? You are blessed to be surrounded by such great shops. I use to love to go to Mentone, Alabama…have you ever been there?

    1. I think that restaurant is still there, but I’m not sure. I’ve been wanting to get over to Mentone for years, but haven’t ever done it. What did you do in Mentone?

  14. I just started following you but I’ve lived in Madison for 15 years. How did I not know about this wonderful antique mall in Decatur? Please tell me exactly where it is. And of course, we could meet there and shop together too. 🙂

  15. My family and I just moved to Decatur about 6 months ago. I have been following your blog a lot longer then that and never even picked up that you lived around here. :O) I am from South Carolina, but I have never been as happy as I am here. The people here are very sweet. Thank you for posting some of my favorite places, and a few that I hope to visit soon!

    1. Ashley! That is so so neat! I love finding people through blogging who live locally. So fun! I went to college in SC and we honeymooned in Charleston. Small world. 🙂

  16. Oh wow Myra, what a fantastic spot to be, I loved this tour through your eyes, and I CANNOT wait to see you again, will it really be June of 2012? Well, time does fly! I look forward to seeing you and I thank you so much for linking up to the par-tay!
