How To Make Your House Smell Amazing

I LOVE making my house smell good. It’s a perk of cooking and baking that I savor.*wink* I used to be a candle lover {and plug-in lover} until I read about the icky chemically-laden stuff that is in them. Boo! Why is it that almost everything that smells good and tastes good is bad for you? Ha!

How To Make Your House Smell Amazing |

Several months ago, I got a Home Diffuser to diffuse essential oils into the air. Oh my, y’all. I love diffusing essential oils! Besides making my house smell fabulous, there are many health benefits to diffusing essential oils.

The cold-air diffuser I use breaks the oils up into a micro-fine mist that is diffused into the air. The oils remain suspended in the air {because they are oxygenated} to freshen and improve air quality. Many oils are antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic, so they kill bacteria and help reduce fungus and mold. Yes!

I use between 5-8 drops of oil in my diffuser. It just depends on what I’m using it for.

Health benefits from diffusing include…

  • Reducing bacteria, fungus, mold and unpleasant odors
  • Relaxing the body, relieves tension
  • Improving concentration, alertness and mental clarity
  • Relieving headaches
  • and many more!

My favorite oils to diffuse are…

Oils To Diffuse

  • Thieves

Thieves is an incredible blend that is highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-infectious. I use this oil a lot, especially during cold and flu season. I diffuse it every night in our bedrooms as well as during the day. It’s like a shield from all the crud. Thieves is a blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus and rosemary and it smells amazing!

  • Citrus Fresh

This oil blend makes my house smell like I’ve been cleaning like a crazy woman. It’s perfect for when someone comes over at the last minute. Citrus oils are also amazing for improved mental accuracy and concentration. Boy, do I need that!! Citrus Fresh is a blend of orange, tangerine, lemon, mandarine, grapefruit and spearmint.

  • Peace & Calming

I seriously love this blend. I’ve been diffusing it in my boys’ room at night to help them sleep well. Peace & Calming promotes relaxation {which I desperately need} and it reduces anxiety. I really love deep breathing when I have this oil going in the diffuser. Peace & Calming is a blend of tansy {blue}, patchouli, tangerine, orange and ylang ylang.

Speaking of diffusers…I’m SO excited because Young Living just launched new enrollment kits and two of them include a steeply discounted or free diffuser that retails for $99. Who doesn’t love free?! This is such an incredible thing that I just have to share. If you’ve pondered dipping your toes into essential oils…figuratively, of course, now is a great time to do so! Below is a graphic I created that explains the options you have when you join Young Living Essential Oils!

Young Living Enrollment Kits

The Premium Starter Kit for $150 is really an amazing deal because the cost for just the Home Diffuser and the Everyday Oils is $258.22! Wow!

  1. I ordered my premium starter kit yesterday and I can not wait to get it! I cant stop talking/reading about it!!!

  2. Myra-
I’ve been waiting for this article. We moved to the Allergy Capital of the United States recently so I’ve been seeking a way to make the home smell good without disturbing the sensitive noses in my home. I’ve even cooked fresh apples and cinnamon in a slow cooker. My best idea for aroma…my worst idea for clean-up!!

  3. Great tips for making your home smell better. With living with 2 young boys, I know how hard it is to make a home to just smell decent. It is a never ending battle!

  4. Not all candles are full of chemicals, Myra!! I use essential oils and like our diffuser but me and my daughter get headaches from our friends home that’s smells overpoweringly like thieves and other oils. They have their place. Chemicals can be found in make up, your children’s toys, and the very air you breathe too. Guess I don’t go overboard and prefer a healthy balance in life.

    • I would love to emphasize that I prefer a healthy balance in life as well. I’m still using my good old Maybelline. ;) I didn’t say that every single candle has chemicals in them. :) The majority of them do, but I’m aware that some are okay. I love to use my diffuser, but it’s not on all the time. Thanks for your comment!

  5. I’m not sure why trying to be healthy & avoiding chemicals is considered overboard! Is there such a thing as a healthy balance of toxic chemicals? :) Thank you Myra for helping to keep your readers healthy. And by all means, throw that Maybelline out!

    • Thanks Sarah for your support!! :) What kind of makeup do you use? I’m looking for a chem-free alternative!

      • Sarah Merkle says:

I use larenim (mineral backwards) and am very happy with it. I was a liquid girl before and this is powder, so it took some getting used to, but it’s worth it to know I’m not soaking up all of those yucky chemicals, or rubbing them on my babies’ faces every time I snuggle them!

  6. Jessica Bennett says:

Just ordered my premium kit! I had a question about diffusers. Do you have to have one in each room? I know zulilly had some a while back. I should have snagged a few extra from there!

  7. A really good natural makeup that I like a lot is “Gabriel”. I love their compact foundation/powder and eyeshadows. I don’t wear lipstick, but many women have told me they love the way it stays on!
