Friday Fails – The Barn Door

A week ago my sister and I toted our children out early and hit up a fabulous estate sale. We each got some wonderful finds…one of which I’ll be sharing with you next week – a makeover. 🙂

We were looking around in the barn when my eyes fell on the most awesome barn door. It was love at first sight.

I asked the gentleman working the sale, how much he wanted for the door. I held my breath hoping that he would say $5.00 or less. He said, “What about five dollars?” I wanted to jump up and down squealing, but he thought I was weird enough for wanting the old beat up and decaying door.

So I didn’t.

Then I realized that I had a small problem. I had failed to remember that I was in my husband’s car…a small car. My sister was in her SUV, but there was still not room for a barn door with all the baby loot.

My predicament might have looked something like this…

Please forgive my “just rolled out of bed” lack of fashion. Ahem.

Thankfully, my brother came to the rescue in his truck, otherwise my pregnant sister and I might have been trying to tie the door on top of her SUV. Wouldn’t that have been a funny sight?!  Ha!

My fail became a fail….averted!

Have you ever bought something and then realized that you didn’t have any way to transport it?

  1. We did that with our tv. My husband needed help squeezing it into our car, and then we had to do minor surgery on the box to get it out of the car. Best part is, it was too big for our entertainment center, so then he had to take a saw to that, too! 🙂
    I linked up!

  2. So glad you were rescued! I know that we’ve purchased things to fit in our car before that wouldn’t fit and then had to hang out so hubs could go get the truck – can’t remember specifics. thanks for hosting Friday Fails! It’s so nice of you to fail at something each week just for the rest of us! 😉

  3. It’s always entertaining on Black Friday to watch people outside stores like Best Buy. They get a huge tv for a great deal and then have to take it out of the box to fit it in their car. I can only imagine how many make it home in one piece with no dents or scratches!

And I mean, there are many, many guys doing this behind the store. They knew they were getting tvs, at least you didn’t know you were getting a barn door! 🙂

  4. What a cool door, Myra!! and yes, I have bought too many things that don’t fit in my car. I’ve had to beg my neighbor twice to go with me to pick something up in her small SUV. Thank goodness for nice neighbors! I really need a truck. Can’t wait to see you today!

  5. Cool door! What plans do you have for it?

I can’t think of any oversized purchases, but hubs and I always disagree when packing for trips. I’m always convinced we’ve got room for “just one more thing” and he’s ready to leave me behind by the time we’re done packing 🙂

  6. Can’t remember buying anything that wouldn’t fit in the van, but I habitually make props at home that are especially tricky to transport to the venue; some are too large, some are too fragile, some are too wet, some are too poppable! (Had to laugh when my teen daughter made her first props for a dance recital this past spring. They looked fantastic–I was really impressed. But like mother, like daughter–they wouldn’t fit in her car. Friend with truck to the rescue!)

  7. Yes! Well, not me, my mom. We drove past a “junk shop” (our favorite kind) and she spotted a mantel leaning against the front of the building. It was solid wood and had many layers of peeling paint, you’d love it. Soo, it wouldn’t fit in our van and she had to call my grandfather to get it with his trailer. Oh, and did i mention we were in TN visiting family and said grandfather had to haul it all the way to FL? Now it’s mounted in her fireplace-less house and is the perfect spot for our MANY stockings each Christmas! Gotta love a happy ending!

  8. I bought a Craftsman tool box for my husband for Father’s Day a couple of years ago. It did fit into the Jeep, but that wasn’t the problem. It was a super-heavy, big box. I pulled up to the front of the store and I had the guys that work there help me load it up into the back. Then, I drove away feeling great! I arrived home and pulled up into the driveway. Then, it hit me! How am I suppose to unload this thing and get it inside?!?! 🙂

  9. Oh, yeah! DH and I bought a piece of siding, and even though we were in our SUV, we had to call my brother to bring his extended bed truck. It barely fit. I guess we could have asked the Home Depot guys to cut it for us. 🙂

  10. Ha! I narrowly escaped being in the same predicament this last Saturday. (I’m just now reading this.) Though I guess the fail is really asking myself *why* I bought what I did. (It would be great, but we may be moving soon, and I’ve been trying to get rid of things we don’t need.) Anyway, I bought a giant green playhouse slide, and plastic rock climbing wall. The lady decided I could have the yellow slide, too, all for just $20. It seemed like such a good deal, and we barely fit it all in the van (thanks to hideaway seats!). I got home, and learned it was over $600 worth of playground equipment. But still…do I need it?! 🙂 But we might just build a playhouse. We’ll see! 🙂
