Our First Place {A Blast From The Past!}

Y’all, get ready to laugh. This blast from the past is sure to produce some giggles {or gasps}! When my hubby and I got married six years ago, we set up our first home. It was a cute, little 800 square foot house.

This was our cozy living room. We decorated and furnished our home on a budget with hand-me-down furniture and accessories that we received for our wedding.  The green vinyl sofa was my parents’ when they got married.

The house had two teeny bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room, a teeny hallway and the eat-in kitchen {which also housed the washing machine and dryer}.

One of my co-workers at the time gave us this upright piano for free. We moved it then and we’ve moved it four more times since. Oh my!  I accessorized with what I realize how was kinda kitschy. Ahem.

I had permission from our landlord to paint, so we painted the kitchen a lilac color to coordinate with the grape fad that I was totally into at the time. Did y’all like decorating with grapes?

Ohh la, la! I had grape towels, grape pot holders, grape jelly jars, a grape recipe file and even bunches of plastic green and purple grapes. Ha!

We painted the bedroom blue {yikes, it was bright!} and added chocolate brown pillows that I made in a college sewing class.

And this was our little bathroom. The sink counter was mauve pink which I didn’t love, so I decorated with pops of color {red and brown} to downplay the mauve. We also installed a towel rack from Target that was perfect for holding a few things.

With the red shower curtain, brown towels, candle holders and the picture, this room worked, albeit in a very different way.

Here’s one more peek into the living room. I really did love this little house. Since the hubster and I were both working at the time, it seems like we were hardly ever at home.

In the last six years, my style and taste have changed…for the better. Ahem.  I find myself craving simplicity, lighter colors and less junk! 🙂 In case you’re incredibly freaked out at the photos of our first house, you can see where we live now.

What about you? Has your taste changed immensely over the years?

  1. Oh my! This really reminds me of my first apartment! It is funny how our tastes and personal touches change over time! Thanks for sharing it was sort of like a walk down memory lane for myself in many ways. Btw, I stumbled upon your blog while on pinterest and love it! Have a great day!

  2. No, I can’t remember that I ever decorated with grapes, but a time when everything was goose related comes to mind….
I think what shines true the most is that you made a serious effort to create a home! and isn’t that what it is all about. Not the magazine worthy interior with all the rightly coordinated touches, but a place where you feel you belong.
But in all honesty I am glad your walls aren’t lilac anymore 🙂

  3. It’s nice to look back and see where it all started sort of speak. I have to agree your taste does change over time. My kitchen had alot of chickens and roosters (don’t know why haha) it felt home for me. I set those chickens and roosters free, now the kitchen has cool decals and its lighter.

  4. Thanks for sharing. We are currently in our first apt and its nice to see other’s places from this time of life 🙂

  5. Oh, has my taste changed over the years!
First it was the 90’s – brass and country lace with a hint of “Early Attic.”

Then, the 2000’s was my World Traveler meets English Cottage Style period (looked like a grandma’s house blended with Pottery Barn – with knick-knacks from all over the world…from garage sales.

The 10’s are proving to be more a Down to Earth period. Literally. Rustic, cabin, cottagy, wood and denim, rugged, with simple natural elegance.

  6. Heehee! I didn’t have grapes, but in my first stateside kitchen (we were stationed in Italy our first & early years) I had the whole cows/chickens/country look. Then, I switched to everything-goose! Ugh.
My kitchen is now a blend of earthy-simple-rustic. Greens, yellows, oranges with a dark Silestone countertop & large island. No “theme”…just lots of my collection of Fiesta ware and some milk glass thrown in.

  7. Your first house is the same size as the house my hubby and I are in right now. We downsized back in November. We’re getting older and we needed something that would be easy to maintain and live in. I, personally, think your first house was cozy and very eclectic—just like mine is now! Not sure though if I like the purple paint in the kitchen–LOL! My first house was Geese—geese and tins everywhere!!! Like you, I’ve simplified. TFS your cute and cozy home.

  8. Well, I have to say that I really did like your first home mostly because you ‘made do’ and instead of having the typical ‘cookie cutter’ house, you made it your own!
Our first house, the previous owners STENCILED grapes all along the entire perimeter of the kitchen, just above the cabinets. And they used a burgundy/rust color for the grapes and a blue/green for the leaves! So, yet I’ve lived with grapes…for just a little while!
Thank you for sharing the photos…I always enjoy seeing how others use ‘what they have’ to make a house in to a home!
    blessings~
