Cabinet Hardware {On The Cheap}

/

I’ve had so much fun updating the kitchen cabinet hardware this weekend. Our mini kitchen update will “do” until we save up the funds to do an entire remodel in a few years.  {Have you noticed that I don’t have a dishwasher? Whatever will I do?}

I didn’t think I was crazy about the barn door style hinges, but Kellie from This Blessed Nest convinced me to keep them. She was so right.  I think it would have been a nightmare to find other hinges to work with the existing cabinets, so Kellie saved me a TON of work! 🙂

What a mess!  Remember we haven’t moved in yet. 🙂

Once I decided to keep the hinges, I started looking around for new cabinet knobs and drawer cup pulls.  I also began working on giving the hinges a new life.  Spray paint baby!

I sanded down the hinges with a coarse sanding pad.  Easy peasy. It was just a little messy.

Then I put them all out on a piece of scrap MDF and brought in the magic…

Y’all.  This Rustoleum ORB spray paint is a dream. I’m not kidding. Once I finally got the red hickey-do off, the hinges were completely spray painted in less than 30 seconds. Again, I’m not kidding.

Lookin’ good!

Oh my word!  Aren’t they fabulous?

Okay, back to shopping for cabinet knobs and pulls. I found some knobs and pulls at Lowe’s, but about died of a heart attack when I saw the cost – over $4 a pull!  Ack! I finally found this shop on Ebay and I ordered 14 pieces for less than $30 including shipping!!  My order came today, so I just had to tell you!

{Gorg}

I think the brand new pieces and the made-over hinges blend quite well, don’t you?

I love oil rubbed bronze!

Instead of paying $60 or more for new cabinet hardware, plus whatever new hinges would’ve cost, I paid less than $30 for the new hardware and $6-7 for the ORB spray paint {and there’s tons of spray paint left over!}

I can’t wait to get the cabinets painted now and install the new hardware!  I think it’s going to look pretty awesome!

What is your favorite cabinet hardware finish?

  1. I love this idea! The ORB spray paint is wonderful. ORB is my favorite finish…I find myself looking hard at things around my house to see what else I can paint! 🙂

    1. Vicki, isn’t it amazing what you can transform with just a coat of spray paint? Truly awesome! And it’s addicting too. 🙂

    1. Thanks Amanda for your sweet comment! I can’t wait to get my cabs done, so I can install the new hardware!! 🙂

  2. Oil rubbed bronze for sure! I’m working on spraying all of our brass door knobs and hinges. So far it has worked great and looks even better!

  3. Love your new hardware.. and can I also say that I LOVE your kitchen too! Mainly because you & I have similar small, old style kitchens.. the set up is even the same!
    I felt like I hit a gold mine once I stumbled upon your blog, you give me hope to someday taking on my own kitchen updates too!
    BTW, I don’t have a dishwasher either.. oh the horror! 🙂

    1. Aww, Theresa you are so kind! #smallkitchenownersunite! 🙂 I guess not having a dishwasher is going to make me more diligent to do dishes pronto! Thanks for your comment!!

  4. I can’t believe how expensive knobs can be! – good tip about looking on ebay – I may be buying those same knobs for my own kitchen 🙂

  5. The kitchen is looking good. I love the ORB finish too. Now if only I could ORB spray paint my hideous brass faucets in the bathrooms, ugh. Love your site. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I had new countertops and backsplash put in a year ago in my white cupboard kitchen. We did a new sink and faucet (ORB) and removed the brass knobs and pulls and replaced them with ORB from Home Depot. What a transformation! Love my kitchen!

  7. Me, again. After leaving my comment earlier, I began wondering about something. Do you know whether the ORB spray paint would work on things like polished brass light fixtures, ceiling fan components, and tarnished brass door hardware? We purchased an older home last year and spent our entire budget on a total kitchen and master bath renovation. Replacing the above items isn’t financially feasible right now and I really don’t like the look. I’m looking forward to seeing how you tackle your house! 🙂

  8. love the new hardware! I’m a new follower. I haven’t linked up a project yet… im too busy reading everyone else’s projects .. laura

  9. I think it’s really neat how the update of the knobs made the hinges look so much better and more modern. The hinges are unique and its cool to leave a little bit of the original retro in your kitchen especially when it looks so good. Can’t wait to see the rest of your remodel. Great job!

  10. I just stopped by your new site for the first time today! I am so excited for you and to see all of the updates! I love the hardware! What a fantastic idea!!

  11. Definitely ORB! I agree – the hinges look fabulous . . . now! Can you believe how expensive little drawer pulls are? Outrageous. I never thought about looking on Ebay, though. Great tip.

    Would love to have you stop by this weekend and link up to Passion for Paint!

  12. I stumbled upon your site trying to figure out if it’s a good idea to paint our hinges, too. It’s been several months now; how do you feel they are holding up?

  13. That hardware looks so easy to install and has a beautiful look to it! We have been thinking about replacing ours. These are great. Thanks for sharing.
    Cheers!
