Friday Fails – Chocolate Milk

Never in a million years did I think I would be giving my one year old chocolate milk. Never say never.

I simply can’t get Ridley to drink milk (except mine, ahem). I’ve tried goat’s milk, cow’s milk, both with Ovaltine – until I found out that it has icky dyes in it. So, I’ve succumbed to buying organic chocolate milk for him and he drinks it like it’s going out of style.

Anyway, on Tuesday, I put him in his pack n’ play for his quiet time and I gave him his sippy cup of chocolate milk. I have NO idea what happened because Ridley’s been drinking apple juice out of this same cup for weeks.

But a few minutes later, I checked on him and he looked like this…

Obviously he was really concerned that there was chocolate milk all over his face…

…and down his legs.

There was also chocolate milk in the bottom of the pack ‘n play AND a puddle of it on the floor. I’m so glad I found the puddle before the ants did! Ha!

Somehow Ridley got the entire lid off the cup. I don’t know how he did it and he hasn’t done it since. Maybe I didn’t put the lid on well enough. Or maybe it was a fluke…I can only hope!

Ridley got his first shower out of the deal..which he loved.

Do you have any suggestions or tips on getting toddlers to drink non-chocolate milk?

  1. Lily was EXACTLY the same way. She only drank chocolate milk for a few months {and I didn’t even give her ORGANIC so that makes me a really bad mom 😉 } I figure…they’re getting the good nutrients from milk, a little bit of chocolate isn’t going to kill them. And by the way, she drinks regular milk just fine now — I think she just had to get used to the taste! I just diluted the chocolate milk with more and more regular milk and after a couple of months, she didn’t even bat an eye!

  2. My two girls never tolerated milk very well until they were at least two years old, and when I was nursing them, I had to cut out milk to keep their tummies happy. So we just did whole milk yogurt (they LOVE it) and cheese—like fun cheese shapes, sticks, etc, to get enough fat in their diets. Don’t stress over him not liking it 🙂 If he’s still nursing at all (even 2x a day is enough) , he really doesn’t need any additional milk products. Momma’s milk is always best!

    1. I agree with not worry about him drinking milk. There are other ways to get calcuim. Babies usually know what’s best for them and if drinking milk isn’t want he wants then you can try again when he’s older. My kids don’t drink milk unless we are out to eat(they probably consider it a treat, lol) I do use milk in cereal and such but don’t consider it a main nurtiental compontent. Cows milk is for cows….but it does make oh, so many yummy things;)

  3. My girl wouldn’t drink milk either for a while. I added chocolate to the milk and slowly lessened the amount. She was drinking straight milk before too long. I was worried about it, but she took to milk. I hope you can find a way to convince him. 🙂
He is adorable, by the way. I think our two would have a lot of fun together!

  4. Two of my kids have not handled milk well…made for bad tommy aches. We stuck to yogurt and deep green veggies….they contain loads of calcium!!

  5. Caedmon had reflux issues from time he was 2 weeks old until almost 2 years old. When he turned one, we started trying Soy Milk and it worked wonders! They even make an Organic Soy Milk.

  6. Ashlyn was the same way for us – and we just mixed whole milk with flavored Pediasure (chocolate or strawberry) about 1/2 and 1/2 for a while, and she did well. When the Pediasure got to be too expensive though, we resorted to the syrups in whole milk too. 😉 Just FYI, the Nestle syrups or powders are relatively healthy for them and minus the “extras” in Ovaltine. 🙂

  7. well, I haven’t had to experience this yet, and I hope it goes well, because Brendon hasn’t found a food he doesn’t like-except lettuce and that’s understandable! One of my friends put some splenda in her 1 year-old’s milk. Since breastmilk is sweeter than regular milk, it makes sense. Or, maybe the natural non-sugar sweetner, like truvia.

  8. I say keep trying regular milk every once in a while, but don’t stress. For ME… I’d rather my kids drink no milk at all than drink chocolate milk, but that’s just me. 😉 We don’t drink much milk here. There are other ways to get calcium and Vit D. and such.

  9. That looks just like my 2yo on a Sunday morning! My kids have chocolate milk on the way to church, and I’m always cleaning up the toddler before we take him in. Fortunately he’s not quite that messy!

  10. I did the same thing with my now 3-year old. Actually, my doctor told me to do it. The child would not take milk for anything (I weaned him at 11 months and the process began)–I heated it, offered it in a bottle and on and on… My dr. said chocolate would be fine because he needed it and he has never looked back! Now that he’s 3, he still refuses white milk but my dr. still says it is fine! No guilt here.

  11. I agree with the Amy’s, just “thin” the choc milk out with white milk, and after a while, it seems to work. My 3 yo (my 4th child) just started drinking milk a few months ago. What worked for him was he started drinking the milk after his cereal, my mom suggested to give him his cereal in a mug (of course, he was using utensils by this point) just a few times, and that did the trick. He proudly tells us how much he loves milk, now. Patience, it’ll come, and if not, yogurt, cheese, green veggies…it’ll give him all the nutrients he needs!

  12. My son has never had chocolate milk, ever. We don’t intend on giving it to him anytime soon either. He is hyper enough with juice and a snack or two a day. I think that if we don’t give them chocolate milk to begin with that they won’t know about it, or the taste of it. Maybe we might let him try some when he is 3 1/2 or 4 years old, but right now, he drinks 2 or more 9 oz. cups of milk a day!!!

  13. I’m not anti-chocolate milk… as a treat. My kids don’t get to drink soda, kool-aid, or Capri Sun, so “chocolate milk” becomes that special occasion beverage for them! I think doctors’ opinions (and mommy opinions) on this one vary immensely… you’ve just got to keep on doing whatever feels right for you! My second child was not a good milk drinker and she was a skinny, mini preemie so they really wanted her to get plenty of milk fats. Since I wasn’t too keen on shelling out for “Pediasure” or some such thing, I had great success mixing full-fat yogurt with whole milk and shaking it together to create my own “drinkable yogurts”. They were packed with calcium and vitamin D and very affordable to make. Yes, there is some sugar in flavored yogurt, but I still felt the nutritional value was superior to, say, the Hershey’s syrup I could have been pouring in there. Good luck! Kids’ taste buds change all the time… most likely, you’ll find out one day that he drank a ton of milk while under someone else’s care. Children love to make liars out of us. 😉

  14. You’re a great Mommy… white milk, chocolate milk, whatever! 🙂

My kiddos were “chocolate milk” junkies at that age too…. eventually I started putting less and less chocolate powder in, and… just like everyone else said… it worked!

  15. I suppose cleaning up the chocolate milk mess is better than cleaning up the mess from when they decide to play with what’s in their diaper or pull-up. That’s something I never thought I’d do, but ended up doing at least twice.

I think it’s great that you’re giving him the organic milk. I don’t see anything wrong with chocolate milk. It’s certainly much better for him than a juice that’s not 100% juice. Besides, he looks completely happy and satisfied. 🙂

  16. I was buying vanilla soy milk for a while, until I realized it “backed” my daughter up. But I noticed she really, really liked it. So, I started putting a couple drops of vanilla in her regular milk and she drinks it like a champ now. Both of my girls do and my oldest has never liked milk. Maybe you could try switching it over.

Or, as I’m sure has already been suggested, mix it with more and more white milk every time. Soon it will just be white milk. It worked for a friend of mine.

  17. Our 2 year old refuses to drink just plain old milk, too. What I have been doing for a long time now is mixing up one half strawberry or chocolate pediasure and half whole milk. She loves this and I figure it is good for her with lots of prebiotics and vitamins and stuff, too. So you might try chocolate pediasure.

  18. Claire (28 months) won’t drink white milk either! She drank it for awhile and then began to refuse her cup when I would give her milk. When I could no longer get her to drink more than 2 ounces of regualr milk a day, I too gave in to the temptation to try chocolate milk. She loves it! She will now request chocolate milk over juice. I just go really light on the chocolate and assume that chocolate milk is better than no milk…..

  19. I had the opposite problem when my 3 year old was younger. She loves milk! But when I tried to give her chocolate milk, as a treat, she wouldn’t touch it. Now that she’s 3 she likes it, but she didn’t like it all then.
