Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes

As far back as I can remember, Sweet Potato Casserole has been a staple at family gatherings around the holidays — particularly for Thanksgiving. A few days ago I was browsing through recipes on and I found a recipe for Sweet Potatoes in the Crockpot! After I read through the ingredients, I was sold!

I made this recipe for our church dinner on Sunday. I didn’t get the potatoes in the slow cooker early enough, so they weren’t cooking fast enough to be done in time. I decided on Plan B and put them in a casserole dish in the oven where they finished just in time for dinner.

Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes6 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced

Place sweet potatoes in slow cooker. Mix remaining ingredients except nuts (I accidentally added the nuts and it was fine). Spoon over potatoes.

Cover and cook on low heat 6-8 hours or until potatoes are very tender.

Sprinkle with nuts. Enjoy!

*Note: I doubled this recipe, but I only did 1 cup brown sugar instead of 1 1/3.

This dish is a very easy sweet potato “casserole” in the slow cooker. I love that I can get it going and forget about it for the rest of the day. The applesauce gave it great flavor as well!

    1. Oh Ellen, that’s sounds yummy to add chicken! I’m definitely doing that next time! So did you put the chicken in raw?

  1. Thanks for this great idea! I made it with just sweet potatoes, a chopped apple, and cinnamon. Yum!
