Skeletons In My Closets

The time has come (or is past due) for me to get control of my house! I try to keep it clean, but somehow — because I don’t keep up every. single. day — the entire house gets terribly messed up before I do anything about it. *covers face in embarrasment*

Am I the only stay-at-home-mom who somehow loses track of time, or gets side-tracked by seemingly important things that take up way. too. much time? Ridley is 10 months old and it is high time that I get my life scheduled, disciplined and my house whipped into shape!

Admitting this is both humbling and motivating for me. I’m tired of messes and I’m tired of hoping that no one stops by my house because I don’t want to invite anyone in to see my pig sty. I know that Prince Charming loves to come home to a neat house which is a huge motivation for me as well.

I’m in the process of putting together a Home Management binder with routines, schedules, bill paying schedules, cleaning schedules, menus etc. I will keep you posted! If you have any great ideas, or links to resources for scheduling or home management, please let me know!

Today, I “tackled” the laundry! I usually don’t have a problem getting it washed and dried, but I have a horrible time doing the folding and putting away part.

Mound of clean laundry!

All folded and put away neatly

I can actually open the laundry room door and walk right in! And Prince Charming won’t have to go on a treasure hunt to find matching socks in the morning before work! Ha!
Next weeks project…

Pulling the skeletons out of my closets and obliterating them!

  1. WOW! I could have written this post. I don't stay at home but I was just telling my husband yesterday that we (OK, me) need a better gameplan to tackle that house because it is out of control. I have the hardest time putting laundry away as well and I have a bedroom closet that is getting tackled tonight. Good luck and great job on the folding!!!!

  2. I am not a mom yet and I can't even keep up with our household and all the duties that go along with it. I can only imagine how much more time and demand is on your as a young mother!
I can wash and dry clothes all day, but I, too, hate the folding and putting up process. 😉

  3. Nope…you're not the only one!

I am SUPER interested in hearing more about your binder — I'd love to see examples of what you're putting in it — sounds like a great idea!

  4. I totally have the same problem. It is really getting to me and I have tackled small things so I feel like I have some kind of victory. I caught up on all the laundry this past weekend but it will add up fast as my hubby wears a uniform to work and then changes when he gets home so that is 2 complete outfits for him every day. It gets overwhelming. I love washing, drying and folding laundry but hate to separate it and put it away. I also hate dishes even though I have a dishwasher. I do them I just don't like it..lol.

  5. Ha ha! I totally relate to your post. What a long story I could share along these lines…but just to say that one part of the battle is figuring out which messes you can "live with if necessary" and which messes just really *have* to be dealt with daily (as much as possible).

I can't wait to see what you put in your binder!

  6. That is a GREAT tackle and yes it is so freeing when we admit were we are weak.

    Love this post.

I'll watch for you next Tuesday.

  7. I love the fly lady site. I have been using it for about 5 years off and on. There are tips for putting together a controle journal (The binder you were talking about) and tons of advice on getting your house clean and organized and keeping it that way. She even uses a zone schedual so that you can deep clean one area of your house a week. It's so easy to get started. Her first assignment is to shine your kitchen sink. It makes a huge difference. http://www.flylady.net/

  8. I have to have a schedule and routine or I just get nothing done! But that doesn't mean I get it all done with my binder all prettied up anyway, I just get more done than I do without it!

  9. Hi Myra,

Here's a challenge for you! Try this every day for 1 week and see if your laundry woes are lessened!

First thing in the morning – before you do anything else!!! – throw in 1 load of laundry.

By the time you've gotten ready for the day it will be ready for the dryer so throw it in the dryer right away.

When it is dry hang up anything that wrinkles or needs hangers and throw the rest in a laundry basket.

(I have a door on my laundry room and I have put an over-the-door hook on it so I can just hang up the laundry right there as I take it out of the dryer. I also keep my empty hangers hanging up in the laundry room over the washer and dryer so it's easy for me to do! I also hang everything I can because to me it is easier than folding!)

Put the laundry basket somewhere where you can work on it as you have time during the day – kitchen table, sofa, bed?. (I'm very blessed to have my laundry room attached to the kitchen! So, I just leave it on the laundry room floor and grab it when I can.)

Make it your goal to just fold and put away that one load each day and don't stress about what's still in the hamper!

This method works really well for me. There are times I don't get the rest of the load folded until I'm working on dinner or until the kids go to bed – but that's okay my goal is to get it done – sometime that day. And it feels good to get that goal done and I don't feel guilty about what's in the hamper because I'll do 1 more tomorrow.

It makes laundry manageable – I would be so very overwhelmed if I had to tackle a whole week's worth of laundry! I've tried many different methods – but I have found this way to be the least stressful and I can usually find a few minutes here and there to get that one basket done.

Let me know if you try this out – I really think you'll notice a big difference!

I have a simple notebook I've put together and I'd be glad to email it to you if you would like.

I have the entire week on 2 pages so I can look at the whole week at once. I even schedule our homeschool lessons on it too!

If I get too complicated I won't keep up with it – so for me simple it best!

Just email me at Frugalindy@gmail.com if you would like a copy.

  10. Oh yes, I have a huge pile of laundry that is in need of some lovin'. I also have several closets that need help as well. We've only been in this house for a few months but the projects never end! Great tackle. 🙂

Stop by my Tackle-it Tuesday if you have a chance! 🙂

  11. No you are not the only one! You really kicked it into gear. That's awesome and I can't wait to see next weeks.

  12. So glad I came across your blog. I sure know what you mean as my baby is 1 year. He is walking now and keeps me busy and seems to undo anything faster than I can do it!

I have been needing something to help me organize and mananage my time better so I am going to do a home managment binder as well. Stop by my blog as I hope to post a post about it soon. It is not up yet but I plan on mentioning some links I have found. So glad to know someone else understands!

    Blessings!

  13. The ONLY way I’m able to keep the need-to-be-folded clothes under control is to fold them as I take them out of the dryer. It works! Try it.
