Christ Alone…

Not what these hands have done
Can save this guilty soul;
Not what this toiling flesh has borne,
Can make my spirit whole.

Not what I feel or do,
Can give me peace with God;
Not all my prayers, or sighs, or tears,
Can ease my awful load.

Thy work alone, my Saviour,
Can ease this weight of sin;
Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God,
Can give me peace within.

Thy love to me, O God,
Not mine, O Lord, to Thee,
Can rid me of this dark unrest,
And set my spirit free.

No other work save Thine,
No meaner blood will do;
No strength save that which is divine,
Can bear me safely through.

I bless the Christ of God,
I rest on love divine;
And with unfaltering lip and heart
I call the Saviour mine.

So often I find myself looking internally instead of looking away to Jesus. Christ is the only one who will never disappoint. He has finished the “work” which saves. It’s done. All I have to do is look to Him…to trust Him. There is nothing that will make us more sad or depressed than looking inward at our faults, sins, failures and just our human-ness. He is our peace and He strengthens us to move on, move forward and be effective for Him.

A Scottish minister once said, “For every look at self, take ten looks at Christ.”

How wise. How difficult. How profund. How simple.

  1. The message was such a blessing to me this morning too! His blood alone can give us peace within! Thanks for the reminder.
