My Favorite Devotionals
I’m so thankful for another Sunday. I love Sundays. They are crazy, insane days for us because we do a lot with church. But, my heart is so refreshed as I’m encouraged to look away from myself and my issues to Christ who is the Lover of my soul.
This past week, I read this quote from Streams In The Desert…
[Our trials] are His mountains. He puts them there. We know that God will not fail to keep His promise. “God understandeth the way thereof and knoweth the place thereof. For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven”; and when we come to the foot of the mountains, we shall find the way.
I’ve gotten a few emails about my favorite devotionals, so I thought I would share them with y’all who are interested. 🙂
Besides reading my Bible, I really enjoy reading Faith’s Checkbook by Charles Spurgeon. I love the short snippets of truth that I can think on throughout the day. I also love Streams In The Desert by Mrs. Charles Cowman. I have both of these devotionals in book form, but I tend to read them online or on my phone.

I will be the first to admit that being a busy momma it is difficult to always have an hour of “sitting down quiet time” with God every single day. Maybe I’m a terrible Christian, but it just doesn’t always happen. If you’re struggling with this too, don’t give up. Don’t allow the enemy to dump debilitating guilt on you. This is a season that passes too quickly that we will miss when our children are older.
Jesus loves us. He accepts us. “It is enough that Jesus died and that He died for me.”
Having devotional time with God shouldn’t be a checklist of things to do each day where we do it and move on to the rest of our day. Instead, it should be an ongoing, moment-by-moment attitude of living with Him, praising Him and pouring out our hearts to Him.
By meditating on God’s word, memorizing, singing and praying throughout the day, while I’m going about my daily tasks, my heart is aligned with Him and sheltered from the enemy’s constant attacks.
God has promised that He is always with us {Hebrews 13:5}, so I whisper prayer here and sing praise there. He’s always listening because He never sleeps. {Psalm 121:4}
I hope you’re encouraged, today, to keep on keeping on. Look to Jesus. Lean hard on Him!

Myra, I love this post. SO true. Sometimes I’ve gone through seasons where I’ve neglected quiet times and it’s hard to go back to them (bc of the guilt the enemy tries to pile on us). But you’re right, God LOVES us as we are and He is a forgiving God. I also love that you share that it’s not a checklist item, but a moment-by-moment relationship. SO true! I will check out these devotionals… I’m looking for new devotionals to use as a family. Have a wonderful start to your week!

@Kim | At Home With Kim, Thank you Kim for your sweet comment! 🙂 Blessings to you in this new week! xo
I have Streams in the Desert, but I’d not heard of Faith’s Checkbook. I like C.H. Spurgeon, so I’ll look for this. And I love “My Faith Has Found a Resting Place”! Reminds me of my days as an Alabama Baptist (we lived in Birmingham 1998-2002). Sweet memories!
Richella at Imparting Grace´s last blog post ..Hope Renewed
@Richella at Imparting Grace, Awww, Richella! I’m sure you will love Faith’s Checkbook! And I had no idea that you were an Alabama Baptist! My Dad grew up a Baptist, but now we’re Alabama Presbyterians….very similar to the old Baptists! 😉 xoxo
Streams in the Desert, is my favorite book after the Bible, I have had it over 10+ years now and though I’ve read it many times, it always seems to be new and just the message God wanted me to learn and focus on that day. God is so Great! He answers my prayers with insight from these devotionals! I must admit that my copy has broken binding, pages shoved back into there places and is kept bound with a rubberband….Yeah, it’s been read. I wouldn’t change it for a new one the the condition of it reminds me of all the answers and inspirations The Lord has provided for me. God Bless you and your family on this beautiful day that the Lord has made for us. By the way, there is 1 other that I recommend & have read time and time again, it is Quiet Moment’s with God (devotional journal), for Women by Honor Books that is a great book for simple understanding and a closer walk with Christ. Thank you for your Inspiration, Myra!
~Theresa.
@Theresa L Begin, Thanks Theresa for your comment and for the suggested devotional! I’ll have to check it out. 🙂
This is such a good reminder that God hears us and listens throughout the day, even if we only have a couple minutes here and there. Have a good day 🙂

I always fall back on My Utmost For His Highest by Oswald Chambers. If I can’t carve out an hour for my quiet time, I love that I can still go deep. I usually follow it up with a prayer from Vally of Vision (book of Puritan prayers), or a Treasury of Praise by Ruth Meyers.
My favorite kids devotional right now is the Herein is Love series by Nancy Ganz, they are a series of Bible commentaries for kids. I get as much out of it as my 9 & 10 yr old! ;o)
Amy (One Day Closer)´s last blog post ..Preparing for Christmas
@Amy (One Day Closer), Oh Amy! Yes, we love Valley of Vision as well! There’s nothing like a wonderful Puritain prayer! 🙂 Blessings to you this week!
What a beautiful and inspiring post. Thank you.
I look forward to checking out the devotionals you shared.

Tara´s last blog post ..Oh Brother!
@Tara, Tara, I hope your soul is richly blessed during this crazy, busy momma season. I so understand…and God does too. 🙂 xo
I love this post. I also go to church and have busy sundays. I’m getting a new devotional by Dr. David Jeremiah. His ministry is called Turning Point. Love him!
@Nina Rae Bishop, What is the new devotional called? I used to listen to David Jeremiah on the radio. He’s a good preacher! 🙂
I just got it today. It’s a beautiful leather bound book with gilded page edges. It’s called “Journey.” “your daily adventure with God.” I love it.
I love the reminder to just be in God’s presence all day long! I easily get caught up in what I’m doing and forget to just breathe a prayer. My favorite devotional is “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young. LOVE it!!! It always touches my heart. Blessings to you this week!
Ruby Showalter´s last blog post ..Valentine’s Decor ~ Part 1
I love Jesus Calling too! I have also been reading the Oswald Chambers Devo online everyday – very convicting and inspiring.

Jesus Calling by Sarah Young is my “go to deco” Have you tried it?
Blessings,

I have Streams in the Desert but haven’t read it in a very long time. Perhaps it’s time to dust ut off and use for my Christmas devotional.
I have taken, of late, to singing the Doxology when times are good, bad, mediocre, or just whenever. Praise to our Lord always sets the heart and mind straight. Thanksgiving blessings to you and yours.
