Beautiful Appliquéd “Bloom” Pillow

by Myra on March 21, 2011

Today I feel like Suzy Homemaker…okay, maybe not.  Maybe it’s just that I made a lovely pillow over the weekend and I’m super excited to share it with you.  Either way is cool with me!

Fabulous Appliquéd “Bloom” Pillow

Today I’m going to show you how you can make one for yourself!

Supplies needed:

  • Canvas Dropcloth
  • Fabric
  • Cording
  • Thread, Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Button
  • Pillow Form

I started out with this fabulous patterned fabric that I found for $4.00 at Hancock Fabrics on the clearance remnant pile and Silhouette sewable heat transfer fabric interfacing.  This stuff is so great!!!

I ironed the interfacing on and then peeled back the non-sticky paper. :)

Using my heavy duty cutting mat, I cut out the fabric shapes {bird, letters}. The decorator fabric that I used is much thicker than standard cotton fabric, so the Silhouette didn’t cut all the way through all the way around. I didn’t mind helping it out a little bit with my scissors.

I covered cording with my lovely patterned fabric for the edges. Swoon!

Then I rounded the pillow’s sharp edges, so the corners wouldn’t be pointy like some pillows I’ve made before.   Clipping the corners made it easier to turn inside out too.

After I got the pillow put together and the appliqué ironed on {the sewable interfacing is temporary iron on}, it was time to stitch.  I originally planned to use my sewing machine, but since I’m lazy and tired, I decided to cozy up in my bed and hand stitch the edges. :)

{do you know how much i love this bird?}

Once more for your viewing pleasure.

I don’t know about you, but this pillow inspires me to bloom right where I’m planted and it encourages me to sing. :)

Now, I’m off to do some crafting, thrifty makeovers or caulking…and probably some star gazing at my new “bloom” pillow! :)

Have a fabulous day!!
