One Man’s Junk…Is My Treasure

In the last few weeks, I’ve found a few unique items that I just had to share with you.

At the same estate sale where I bought the barn door, I found a nightstand for $7 {makeover coming soon}, and this amazing Dietz Little Wizard kerosene lantern.  Isn’t the color fabulous?!

From the research that I’ve done, I pretty confident that this lantern is from the 1950s. I paid $5 for it and I’ve since found similar lanterns for $30.00 or more – so I got a deal! I going to clean it up and find a wonderful place for it in my house.

I found this gloriously spiral lamp at a yard sale for $2. I can NOT wait to paint it {maybe a bright color or white} and rewire it.

Can’t you just see an amazing drum shade on this lamp? LOVE it!

I have been wanting a fork and spoon like this for a long time.  Hobby Lobby has a similar set for $30 or so. Ouch! I’ve almost bought them ten times, but my frugalistic conscience just makes me put them back…every time.

When I found this set at a yard sale for $2.50, I wanted to dance around like a crazy person, but I didn’t. I calmly kept my composure as my brain went wild with ideas.

Yesterday, I cleaned them off and gave them two coats of black spray paint and one coat of the clear glaze that I spray my pumpkins with.

I’m not totally in love with how they look on this shelf in my breakfast area, but it will do for now.  Eventually I’d like to get them hung on the wall.

These treasures make my heart go pitter-pat!  I just love digging through other people’s junk! 🙂

Have you found any treasures lately?

  1. That lantern is gorgeous! I do not have an eye for “trash to treasure”… I’m afraid I just don’t have that particular talent. I CAN re-purpose leftovers into about twenty different new things though SO… that’s kind of a trash to treasure type scenario… right? 😉

  2. How nice to see others who have an eye for treasures, that most people consider trash!
Two of my favorite finds in the last year are two ceramic pieces by Haeger.
My large black panther cat was a steal at a yard sale for $5. I came home and found that one person had sold this same cat on ebay for $200.
The other is a white vase that holds my diningroom flowers-it was $4.99 at the thrift store. I even like the little chip and crack in it. =)
Here’s to more great finds for you! You did a nice job on your fork and spoon-will look forward to seeing the other pieces after you are post the updated photos of them!

  3. I’ve been hoping I could find a lantern or two like that for a while now, but you’re right, they usually are a lot pricier than $5!! I love the one you got! You found some great items!!

  5. Love your website! I just saw what you did with your spoon and fork and I wanted to share that I found a spoon and fork at a thrift store and just today I primed them and spray painted them. I love how they turned out.
