Layered Texas American Dip

by Myra on April 5, 2010

This recipe for Layered Texas American Dip is tried and true. My Mom has been making it for years. Now my sister and I make it for our families and for different parties and events. Layered Texas American Dip is fabulous as an appetizer, lunch or after-church-on-Sunday-night snack.

Layered Texas American Dip

  • 2 cans refried beans (or use homemade)
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 packages taco seasoning mix
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 avocados, chopped
  • 2 -3 Roma tomatoes, chopped
  • sliced black olives (eyeball it)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Spread refried beans evenly on a platter.  Use kitchen shears to cut green onions over refried beans.  Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, taco seasoning and cilantro.  Spread over green onions.  Layer chopped avocados and tomatoes.  Add black olives and top dip with cheddar cheese.

Chill.  Serve with tortilla chips.  Enjoy!

*Note: You can make this dip with whatever you have on hand.  You can leave out the cilantro and it’s still very tasty.  I’ve had to leave off avocados before because they’re either too ripe or too hard.  Layered Texas American Dip is a very forgiving dish…make it how you like it! :)

I’ve never used Mayonnaise but, other than that! Delicious, one of my favorite dips! I’ll use refried black beans instead of regular and I add the taco seasoning to the beans, too! ;-)
So glad you’re adding your recipes to the linky! I love seeing what you’ve got cooking! Your pictures are beautiful.

@JessieLeigh, I have a major weakness for cheese! At least it’s good protein, right?? :)

Yum! The mayo would be a great twist! How much cilantro is needed? (I love it – I could never have too much!) :)

Even though some snow fell today, I’m still thinking of good summer dinners to serve. I think this fits the bill. Now if the snow would GO AWAY!

I grew up in a Pastor’s home, so I totally know how it is. My whole family gathers at my parents’ home after church on Sunday nights. We love that time and this dip is perfect! :)

Made this last night after church. Soooo yummy! I skipped the beans as kids aren’t fond of them and then used my own homemade taco seasoning and mashed the avocado up as guacamole with some salsa and garlic salt. :D
