Closet & Garage Decluttering Reveal

This week I’m going to find my bravery and lose my pride show you the power of decluttering. If you don’t believe me, you will by the end of this post.

I hate clutter. It makes me feel stressed and icky.  There are two places in our house that seem to get left on the “back burner.”  Two places that always get more junk shoved in them just to get said “junk” out of sight.

Our walk-in closet and garage have been messy for far too long.  In the last week, it’s all changed. *happy dance!

This is incredibly embarrassing to admit.  If you’ve been reading my blog since November, you might remember the Skeletons in My Closet.

This is what my closet looked like in November. Awful, huh? Embarrassing? More than you can even imagine!  It might have even gotten worse since this picture was taken!  {blush}

Today it all changed.

My husband walked into the closet and said, “Oh wow!  Our closet has carpet in it!” 🙂

Obviously, I have no pride.

The garage is another catch-all place that gets junked up way too fast. My husband hasn’t been able to pull his truck in the garage all winter because of the junk.

So, just in time for spring (and no more frosty windshields) we cleaned the garage out. We threw out junk, made a trip to the dump, donated more “junk” and now….

…The garage is clean!! Ernie can finally pull his truck in!  (The cradle is also gone now too.)

It is so empowering to get rid of stuff!!  I’m pretty sure that we accomplished Amy’s 365 Days Decluttering Challenge in a matter of one week! Ha!

Do you have “catch-all” places in your house?  Am I the only one who has to work at fighting the clutter?

  1. Oh, it looks great! I have catch-alls, but unfortunately they seem to constantly get re-buried. I spent all of December decluttering my house (and did a whole blog series about it!) but now? Ugh. Don’t ask. We have April off. I may need to do another series, just to keep me on task. 🙂

    1. It’s amazing how much blogging about “challenges” helps you keep up! I totally know what you mean, if you miss even a few days of keeping up with stuff… it just multiplies like crazy!

  2. It is humbling to post pictures of clutter & mess isn’t it!! I have a few areas that need some work (again!!) You have done an awesome job…I was very impressed with how clean you got the garage…I’m sure Ernie will still enjoy the garage, especially on rainy days!!

    1. Thanks Rachel! It was a lot of work, but the rewards are huge! Decluttering is a never ending cycle.

I’m so glad that Kelly and Jacob got to meet up with y’all for dinner! How fun! 🙂

  3. That was our garage at one time. Finally, we said, “Why in the world would we store JUNK in the garage when our cars are some of the most expensive things we own?!?” It was ridiculous. We cleared it out and never had that problem again. Now, NOTHING gets taken to the garage unless it LIVES there. 🙂 (I can.not stand clutter either – drives me INSANE)

  4. Looks great!! Isn’t it so refreshing to take out the clutter! Yesterday, I organized our drawers and cabinets in the bathroom. It made me so happy for things to be organized last night when I got ready for bed and this morning when I got ready for the day!

I get stressed by clutter and lack of organization, too. I think sometimes things don’t get done because I get overwhelmed by everything that I want to organize and de-clutter. {Trust me. The list is long. 🙂 } I just have to remind myself to choose one thing and start there.

  5. Nice work! We have an island in our kitchen, and it’s covered, constantly. Also the coffee table, the laundry room, and the enclosed patio. We’ve lived in this house for over a year now, and still have boxes (empty) on our porch that need broken down and recycled. I think we should just haul them all outside this week and do it. Thanks for the motivation/inspiration!

  6. You mean “closet” is not code for “clutter-catcher”??? Lol Our master closet seems to catch everything that doesn’t really have its own place to abide. And garages are just naturally an easy dumping ground! I’m getting ready for some major spring cleaning (out) too!

  7. Looks great! Our catch all places were our closet and 2 closets in my sons room and another closet in my other sons room. We cleaned them all out this past week/weekend. So now my sons actually have functioning closets and the other closet is storage for our business stuff and other stuff that is worth keeping. I feel so much better now that I have decluttered. My van is full of stuff to donate and we took a ton of bags of trash to the dump.

  8. Terrific job, Myra! I’m so proud of you! Just so you’ll know, sometimes clutter happens because of life (emotional) issues underneath that we maybe aren’t ready to face and deal with yet or that we need to address. Maybe that’s one reason it feels soooo good to finally get the junk out–the underneath issues have been cleared out too! 🙂

  9. Wow, GREAT job!!

My closet has been catching all my junk (which is why I named my beauty blog “in her closet” cause I’m sure if I reviewed everything stored in my closet I’d have enough makeup stored in there to blog for 2 years without having to buy anything new!) and so does the area in front of my TV. I can’t even see my carpet anymore! I know I should clean it soon because bugs and spiders love hiding in my room during the hotter months since there’s so many places to hide!

  10. Wonder job! Don’t you feel like you lost about 20 pounds? I always feel that way when I’ve lightened-the-load. As for keeping the clean clothes monster under control? The only way I’m able to handle that one is to always, always, always fold the clothes as I take them out of the dryer. Yes, it slows things down a bit…but in the long-run it makes everything so much better and then I never end up with piles of clean clothes. Try it! Love your blog.
