Frugal Early Education

I’m always on the lookout for great educational tools to have on hand as Ridley gets older. I scour thrift stores, yard sales and even the JCPenney outlet store. I’ve found educational board games, flashcards and great books! I can hardly wait to teach Ridley to read. Ask me how excited I am when I’m actually doing it, okay?  My friend Amy posted about a fabulous reading program that I’m definitely going to consider when the time comes!

Last week, while I was at Target (one of my favorite stores), I checked out the dollar section and I hit the jackpot for *cheap* educational tools! Look at all this stuff!

For $10 I purchased:

  • 2 dry erase mats (one is printing, one is cursive)
  • Addition and Subtraction flash cards
  • US Presidents flash cards
  • United States flash cards
  • Phonics and Sight Words flash cards
  • A frog clock (that I can’t find at the moment)
  • A State “lift-the-flap” book with capitals and dates of statehood!

How awesome is that?  I’m so excited to have all this on my learning shelf!  Next time you’re at Target, check it out!

  1. I love Target’s Dollar Spot! We got that US book with the capitals this Summer and my then-18 month old daughter was able to learn where Illinois and Texas are (where our extended family lives) and Minnesota (where we live) because of the nice sized, clear pictures. She loves that book!

  2. These are some great finds! I haven’t seen a dollar section at our Target, but you have motivated me to look harder next time I’m there, with your cute calendar and now these goodies. 🙂

  3. Great finds at Target! I too love their “dollar spot”, and just purchased those same Presidents and U.S. States flash cards for my boys. For $1.00 each, it was fun to ‘splurge’! Way to go on scoring thrifty educational resources!! 🙂

  4. This could be why ours has been empty for a couple of weeks!

Mary Jo, all Targets have them- they are right as you walk in the front door. It’s called the ‘Dollar Spot’ or ‘See Spot Save’ section. Lots of cool stuff, and it’s even better when it hits 75% off and becomes the quarter section.

I love Target for that! Plus they go to 75% off after a couple months. So you’d end paying even less. Great for birthday presents too.

  6. wow! Thanks. Got to get back into Target. 🙂 I’ve kinda switched over to Walmart since I shop mostly price match. 🙂

Might be redundant (didn’t read the other comments!) but have you been to Dollar Tree? they almost always have homeschooling stuff. Yup, you guessed it for a dollar!! Sometimes more, sometimes less… but always something!

  7. I’m a kindergarten teacher and my love is teaching reading. Check out http://www.starfall.com. They offer homeschool curriculum, and they also have lots of free printable mini-books for sight words, short and long vowel words, and other phonics skills.
