Loving On Color & My Colortopia

by Myra Hope

Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved color.  I’ve always enjoyed looking at paint fans and experimenting with various hues. My crazy color love was further developed with a year of color theory as part of my interior design degree. I can’t even tell you how much I enjoyed color theory.

In class, I had to develop a perfectly scaled color wheel with various saturations and hues from watercolor paint chips that I created. It was mind boggling, but so very cool when I finally got it right. Confession: I might have shed a few tears along the way. Ha!

I also studied how color effects us psychologically.  Blues are cooling. Reds stimulate. Yellow has made babies agitated {yet so many paint nurseries yellow}. And green soothes us.

Clients have hired me to choose the paint colors for a specific room or even their entire home.  From my observation, it’s really easy for an untrained eye to choose a paint that is wayyyyy too intense.  Once a more subtle paint color is on all four walls, it has a wonderful “pop” while not being overwhelmingly bright or intense.

Getting inspired is a huge part of the paint selection process. Whether you’ve gained inspiration from a magazine, Pinterest or real life, we have to find inspiration somewhere. Inspiration doesn’t always happen instantly…oftentimes, inspiration evolves for me.  It just takes time.

I’m really excited to tell you about My Colortopia from Glidden.  Besides having a blog with contributors that many of you will recognize, they have taken some of the guesswork out of choosing paint colors with a super cool color quiz.  Based on personality, style and preference questions, My Colortopia suggests colors that may fit you and your lifestyle. So fun!

Take the quiz below…

How did you do? Did the quiz give you inspiration for painting a room in your house?

I can’t wait to hear what My Colortopia came up with for you!

Glidden brand paint has sponsored me to promote MyColortopia, but as always opinions and thoughts are mine.

That is quite fun! I have always loved looking at the paint chips too! This year for Christmas gifts we made notebooks out of them.

Fun! I want to go back and take it again to see what it comes up with if I answer differently! Totally cool! Thanks! (And for the record, we painted the top half of our first nursery yellow—yikes!!)
