Easy Spring Banner Craft {Tutorial}

by Myra Hope

I’m so excited to share the frugal and easy Spring banner that I created to hang on the mantel!  I love how it turned out!

Adorable, right?

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • 4 – 12 x 12 pieces of scrapbook paper
  • 2 – 12 x12 pieces of cardstock {I used one white and one blue}
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Glue gun
  • Jute twine
  • Rubber cement
  • Pen
  • Hole punch
  • Scissors

Cut all four pieces of scrapbook paper into 8×12 and 4×12 pieces.  I cut mine like this {above} because I wanted the stripes to go around in circles once I had them pleated and folded.

Pleat 8 x 12 pieces like this.

Then fold pleated paper in half.

Hot glue one edge and then press the edges together to form a fan shape {half-round shape}.

Looking pretty!!

Then pleat the 4 x 12 pieces.

Put a dab of hot glue in between each fold near the tip.  Squeeze the pleats together.  Then hot glue the folded 4 x 12 piece to the folded 8 x 12 piece to complete a circle.

I LOVE how this paper folded and how the circles turned out!

To make the centers, I used my Silhouette machine to cut out scalloped white circles from cardstock.  You could also use decorative scissors to achieve a scalloped edge.

Use rubber cement to glue the circles to another piece of cardstock {I used blue} and then cut them out with scissors.  {See how they look below!}

Cut out letters whatever word you want.  Use a stencil or a cutting machine. I adore my Silhouette and use it all. the. time!

Punch holes in the circles {one on each side} and thread jute twine through so you can hang up your new, cute, Spring banner!

Now, in the words of my friend Beth, who inspires me daily…”go forth and be cute” and make an adorable Spring banner!  I made mine for less than $5.00 because I already had a few supplies on hand!! :)

Check out how I used my Spring banner to decorate my mantel!  It’s beautimous!

That is so beautiful, Myra! Unfortunately for me it looks like I would need to be able to cut a proper circle. ;) I am just not craft-talented.

You’ll have to pick out a bowl, coffee can, or soup can in the diameter that you need! I also am circularly challenged!

Those are adorable! I hate to say it, but I completely suck at decorating for anything. I really need to start doing more so this apartment feels like a home rather than the little box we live in!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have been loving your blog for a while, this is adorable. I have completed a birthday banner and a Christmas banner, but we have no spring birthdays and this will be great to fill in the space for a few months. I will have to think about a summer and fall theme as well. I have been fiddling with the fanning process and yours looks much simpler than the one I was trying to mimic. Thank again.

Thank you for this! I did a similar tutorial after I figured out how to make them but couldn’t ever figure out how to hang them. I never thought to punch holes – I was trying to hot glue ribbon or a hanger on them! Here’s how I did mine: http://coveredandprayingtowngirl.blogspot.com/2010/12/paper-medallion-tutorial.html
