Saving Money On Children’s Clothing

by Myra on March 10, 2010

I love shopping.  There is something in me that needs “retail therapy” from time to time.   I’ve gotten a lot better about what I spend money on, though.  I frequently get my shopping “fix” by getting great deals at the grocery store.  I love a deal.  Anytime.  Anywhere.  Any day!

In the last few weeks, I’ve been able to score some amazing deals for Ridley’s wardrobe! I’ve found that buying clothes out-of-season is a fantastic way to save a lot of money.  I also shop consignment sales for more “in-season” items as well.

Here are some recent finds:

  • Christmas 2010 pajamas
  • 24 mo blue turtleneck onesie (love that they stay tucked in!)
  • 24 mo gray cords
  • 24 mo Christmas outfit (pants, shirt, vest, tie)
  • 3T Christmas outfit (pants, shirt, vest)
  • Photobucket

  • I also found this cah-ute swim shirt for 1.19!  It was originally $10! *gasp*

If I had paid regular prices for these items it would have cost me $129.68! I can’t imagine paying that much. It’s like highway robbery!

Or maybe I’m just a tight wad.

Whatever.

But after all the sale discounts, I paid only $34.98 including tax!!!

Deeply discounted retail prices can sometimes even beat thrift store prices…at least the thrift stores around here.  Even my Thrift Store Shopping Diva-Frugal Fashionista friend Jen agrees that buying clothing out of season is a great money saving tip!

I love getting lots of bang for my buck and buying clothes out of season does that for me!  I can’t wait until yard sale season starts up again.

Do you buy clothes out of season?  Have you found a great clothing deal lately?

Getting clothing cheap is the only way we get them at our house! Clearance, thrift shop, yard sales, Freecycle, and hand-me-downs from church friends are all blessings to our family.

And you think you are a tighwad? I won’t buy anything from the thrift shop unless it has one of those 50% off colored tags. Otherwise I wait til the next shopping trip. Doing this has scored me Gap, LL Bean, and Lands End shirts for $1 each and pants from Children’s Place and Old Navy for $2.

I do the same thing. I opened a Kohl’s charge and between their in store sales and all the coupons they give me I spend next to nothing on clothes for our family! Seriously.

The trick for me is setting a limit…so I can make sure to pay off the card as soon as the bill comes!

I usually hit up the twice-a-year “nearly new” sales at the local elementary school for all our clothing needs. Though, as my kids get older, it is harder to find used clothing (boys especially are just harder on their clothes). Great reminder to check out the off-season sales. Thanks!

I shop thrift stores and clearance sales for my kid’s clothes. I recently bought several items at Gymboree on clearance for $2.99 and under – I spent $25 and got at least 8 outfits and accessories!

I love a great deal also!! I buy out of season sometimes, it’s hard to know what size she will be, but I always get her shoes out of season! Last year I got like 10 pairs of “winter” shoes for $20.00 at Target! Goodwill is great, too. I love finding Target stuff there that has never been worn before! I got a Speedo swimsuit there with a floaty inside of it for $2.50! At Wal-Mart they are $30.00! Love shopping!!

wow! just found your blog through Things I Love Thursday over at The Diaper Diaries … love it! And I love all your cute new clothes! I too love clearance shopping and out-of-season shopping! I don’t have kids (yet), but I do it for my hubby’s (and my) clothes! Especially with the economy the way it is, and how prevalent sales are these days, you’d be silly to ever pay full price!

Awesome! I love hearing about great deals that others have found!!!

We live overseas so have to buy lots of clothes at a time, which means lots of out-of-season shopping, so lots of discounts and savings!!! :-)

One helpful tip for you… I found some adorable onesie-type shirts at Children’s Place in size 3 for my daughter several years ago, at about $2 each I couldn’t pass up the deal, and bought several in different colors. Not such a good idea. I LOVED the onesie-type shirts at a younger age, loved that they stayed tucked in and all that. But as the kid gets older? Not a good idea as they start potty training, etc! I ended up cutting them straight across and making into regular shirts, as I couldn’t stand having to do up the snaps on my 3-year-old!!!

Cute clothes! And what great deals!

If only I could remember to do this–we’re just now running out of hand-me-downs for our 4-year old, so I need to get it in gear!

I’ve tried buying clothes this way, but my son usually ends up having a crazy growth spurt and I get stuck. It’s hard for me to guess where’s he’s going to be. BUT, we do get a ton of hand me downs from a friend. And, my mom has a great thrift store where she gets lots of stuff for him. I usually just fill in where I need to with sales and coupons at JC Penney and Old Navy. I cringe at the thought of paying full price for anything!

I love buying clothes out of season too. I think thrift stores are often higher than sale racks. I also like to look at the seasonal clothes after the holidays. I get things in the size my toddler will be the next year. Thanks for posting a great tip!

Blessings!

For those who want to save on buying new clothes for their kids, you may want to check out shops like Ross and Target, that will offer designer names at discounted prices.

Better than hand-me-downs! :)

I love finding great deals on clothes.

When we were in the states, Old Navy (in-store, not online) and Kohls were my favorite stores to sort through the sale clothes.

I spent $50 on $150 worth of clothes for my baby at Macy’s a few weeks ago. I got jeans for $2.99!!! That is an awesome deal!
Yay for sales!

I LOVE finding great deals! I pretty much only shop the clearance racks at stores, and that is if I have to go to the stores. Around here we have Mom2Mom sales, and I have scored a TON of great deals. I love that spring is coming (Yea! Yard Sales and Mom2Mom sales!) I just went to my first Mom sale of the year and got a pair of light blue cotton overalls with a sweater and shirt for my 1yr old son for $2. The outfit still had the tags on it and was $49.99 from Macy’s. Got a lot of other great deals too. Then went to Walmart that afternoon and found their heavy winter coats on clearance and picked one up for my son for next year for $5 (which included a bonus set of mittens and a hat). I am so excited for the spring sales. Oh, and yes, I do buy out of season. I get such amazing deals that if for some reason my son can’t wear it, I can resell it at a garage sale and get my money back for it!

This is this kind of an excellent resource that you are providing and you give it away for free of charge. I adore seeing web sites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free of charge. It?s the old what goes close to arrives close to routine. Did you acquired plenty of links and I see lots of trackbacks?
