DIY Ruffled Fabric Pumpkins

/ /

Good morning, fabulous friends! It was a gloriously Fall-ish weekend with chilly nights and cool days. Ahhh! I’ve had a fabric pumpkin project on my Fall to-do list for several weeks and I finally had time to get it done over the weekend. I am in. love. with these adorable ruffled fabric pumpkins!

Oh my word. Aren’t they so cute?!

This mini chevron pumpkin is one of my favorites. And the little stick stem is perfect.

I also love this short and squatty ruffle-y pumpkin made from ticking-like cotton. Swoon.

Anyone can make my ruffled fabric pumpkins! They are super easy to create!

Supplies:

  • Fabrics of your choice
  • Upholstery thread {I recommend this because it’s very strong.}
  • Needle, Scissors, Ruler
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Beans, rice, gravel or anything to weigh the pumpkins down a bit
  • Batting or plastic grocery bags {recycle, baby!}
  • Sticks or something for stems
  • Sewing machine for ruffles…or make them by hand.

 1. Measure the width and length that you desire. My pumpkins measured:

  • Black & White Greek Key – 36″W x 13″H
  • Squatty Ticking – 44″W x 15″H
  • Baby Red Chevron  – 14″W x 7″H
  • Yellow and White Polkadot – 30″W x 16″H
  • Red Chevron – 22″W x 10″H

2. Match right sides together and stitch up the side seam. You can use a sewing machine, but I just used a needle and thread. Easy peasy.

3. Next, use a wide gathering stitch and sew around the raw edge.

4. Finish it off by securing with several stitches through the gathered fabric “knot.”

5. Turn the pumpkin “shell” inside out.

6. Add a handful of beans to the bottom.

7. Stuff the pumpkin with plastic grocery bags and batting. I liked using a combination of the two.

8. Gently pull the thread to gather the fabric together. If you think the pumpkin doesn’t have enough batting, now is the time to add more. Secure the opening with a few knots and be sure to leave space for a stem.

Since this pumpkin was so short and round, I decided to do a little tufting. I pushed the needle and thread up and down several times while pulling firmly on the thread. Then I secured it with a knot.

A few sticks from the yard worked perfectly as stems. I would love to try some with stems from a pumpkin patch…someday. 🙂 To secure the stems, I gobbed some hot glue on the end and stuck them down in the pumpkins.

On to the ruffles! I cut 1 1/2″-2″ wide strips of each fabric. Each strip was about 44″ long.

I used my sewing machine {set on the longest stitch} to sew strips together and then I sewed right down the middle of each strip. Then, carefully gather the ruffles. Last, I used hot glue to apply the ruffles to the pumpkins. There are so many possibilities!

I cut a few burlap leaves and hot glued them on.

I can’t get enough of yellow this year. Love this mustardy polkadot.

And that’s all there is to it! These DIY Ruffled Fabric Pumpkins are incredibly simple and inexpensive to make. They take more time than anything, but I think the results are worth the time to create them! 🙂

  1. Love these, Myra! I just picked up 1/2 yard of that red chevron material at HL yesterday and some of the yellow polka dots too. I am making rolled fabric flower pens for some Christmas presents. I just saw that fabric in HL 2 weeks ago and they are almost sold out of every color – they said it is all on backorder too – WAY popular! 🙂

Love these fabric pumpkins – may have to try some 🙂

  2. Myra, these are FABULOUS. I have been wanting to try these, and you just may have given me the courage. Okay, me and my mom. 😉

    1. That sounds great Jeanette! I think burlap would be fun! I have muslin on hand, but haven’t tried them with muslin yet. 🙂

  3. These are really cute!! How about using cinnamon sticks for the stems? The smell would be an added bonus!

  4. Not sure if I missed, but where did you get your fabric from? Not many local store choices up near where I live in Michigan. You would think Joanns Etc would kick it up on notch on mod-prints! 😉

    1. Thanks so much for your comments! 🙂 I found these fabrics at Hobby Lobby and Hancock Fabrics. Everything was from Hobby Lobby except the chevron which I found at Hancocks. I hope that helps! 🙂

  5. Hi- I’ve made fabric pumpkins the past two years. One year I cut out circles from fat quarters (autumn theme fabrics), basted twice around the edge of the circle and gathered until the shape resembled a pumpkin. I put dried beans on the bottom of the pumpkin and then filled the rest with fluffy stuff. I really like the idea ofr si recycling/reusing plastic grocery bags as filler! Really love the ruffles idea and I’m so happy I stumbled across your site.

  6. These are way too cute! Maybe I will try a little larger and see how they look as pillows..sans stem! But will definitely practice on some of these little cuties first!
    Thanks for the inspiration!
