Home Goals For 2012

Today, I’m sharing a few goals that I’ve made regarding our home. I’ve been thinking a lot about this subject, so when Nester announced that she was hosting a home goals party, I decided that the accountability of sharing them with you would be excellent. That means I really have to DO them. 🙂

Make our home more of a sanctuary.

Right now, I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water. I’m exhausted and tired beyond belief thanks to this little miracle. So, right now I’m giving myself grace for accomplishing healthful meals and clean laundry – whether or not the laundry is put away. Ahem.

To make my home more of a sanctuary….

  • Clean more efficiently {really excited about a project I’ll be sharing soon!}
  • Light candles more often
  • Play music every day
  • Be happy and less stressed because I’m taking care of my body and soul
  • Nourish my sweet family intentionally with my words, my actions and good food

De-junk And Have A Yard Sale

I really wanted to start on the Great Clean Out of 2012 before now, but I’m really hoping to have more energy stat! If you see any floating around send it my way, umkay?  In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing the mess and the clean out. We will be donating, selling and getting rid of stuff.

It’s kind of a problem when you can’t even open a closet door or file drawer because there’s so much stuff in it. {blush}

Accomplish 3 Big Projects

There are three areas in this house that I would love to get re-done before the baby arrives in July.

  • Ridley’s bedroom needs to be converted to a “kids’ room.” We are going to put the babes in the same room regardless of whether this baby is a boy or a girl. I’m really pumped about this project!
  • The jack ‘n jill bathroom, between Ridley’s room and the study, needs the wallpaper removed, new paint, new curtains {I’m kinda over the ruffles} and some love to remove the “boring” factor.
  • The laundry room is in desperate need of a paint job.  It is one of my favorite spaces in this house {although it’s actually off the back porch}. The floor, ceiling and walls are all wooden planks. Swoon. I’m itching to paint it a beautiful white and decorate it.
Can I get all that done before July? Hmmm…I will give it my best shot! 🙂

Show More Hospitality

My hubby and I are both excited about this goal.  We want to open our home to our community, our families and our church family more.  I really don’t care if my house isn’t spotless when people come. I hope they come to see us and not the house. 🙂

However, when clothes are piled on every chair, garbage is overflowing and dishes are piled three feet high, I can’t stand my house…much less invite people over. #keepingitreal

Those are my goals for my home this year. Have you made goals for your home?

  1. These are some fantastic goals, Myra! You will get your energy back, but I love your attitude right now of just caring for your family. I’m pregnant with #3 and during my first trimester was only able to maintain my household/family, nothing more. At first it really frustrated me, but then I tried to embrace that time and make the most of it and I’m glad I did. Praying right now for strength for you today as you fix your eyes on Jesus.

  2. We’re moving back to the States this summer (woo-hoo!), so home goals will be to unload as much as we can here so we don’t haul unnecessary items we’ve accumulated home to unpack and deal with, pack this place up, find a new place (once we know where it is we’re going- always an adventure with the military!), and we’d like to sell the home we own in NC. All three of our children are in one {very large} room here- 2 girls and a boy, ages 3-9. It’s worked out just fine for us!

  3. I love your goals and can relate to so many of them. I am always striving to make my home a peaceful, happy place for my family. My kiddos are older now, but teens need a sanctuary too! Love your blog and decorating ideas!!

  4. Myra,

Absolutely wonderful goals! I recommend that you break each of the goals into smaller goals (if you haven’t already). I love being able to “check off” when a task is accomplished. I am sure that you will benefit from it as well.

For the sanctuary goal, ever think of one of those water sculptures? It might be a little tricky with little ones in the house. I just love the sound of trickling water! It is soothing!

  5. Those sound like great goals! I definitely need to be happy & stress less about my home. So many times I find that I am stressed or frustrated because the house isn’t as clean as I’d like or I’m behind on the laundry AGAIN! I wish it didn’t bother me so much!!

As far as the de-junking…we just cleaned out our master bedroom closet & made two trips to Goodwill, making large donations both time, it felt WONDERFUL!! Now if I could just do that in every other closet in the house!!

  6. Love your enthusiasm and your thoughtful planning..my goals are much the same..but as a mama of 2 adult girls I would encourage you to give yourself some grace and make sure those babies get the best of their mom! God bless you through this exciting year and may He be lifted high in everything you are and do!

  7. Our biggest goal for this year is to get our renovation completed. It’s been a long haul–two years! So hopefully we can check that puppy off our list come spring (that’s the plan anyway). You’ll be hearing the Hallelujah chorus all the way from PA for sure. Good luck with all your projects!

  8. I love your ideas/goals! I think they seem pretty manageable, too, especially taken a (baby) step at a time. I especially like your ideas on making home a sanctuary… I’ve always wanted home to be where we most want to be. You make me want to go light a candle and turn on some Pandora 🙂

This is my first(!) visit but it won’t be my last 🙂 Have a good day!

  9. Those are some great goals.

My top three are: Clean and re-organize the master bedroom as baby #6 will be arriving there in August.

    Clean and re-organize the basement

When I have more energy I need to get the extra laundry put away or assign that task to some of the older children.

Tha’t my top 3 before the little one comes.

  10. Oh Myra! I just read about you miracle!!! How ever did I miss that? Congratulations!!! I am over the moon for you and your family. I will be praying for you sweet sister, for your energy to return, sickness to subside, and most importantly for a healthy, blessed pregnancy. Woohoo! And you have house goals??? Wow, you are as amazing as I picture you to be. Blessings Myra. Love Lisa

  11. Myra, I love your home goals for the year! I sat down and wrote out my personal goals, but I really need to set a few for my home too. I want to finally get my unfinished projects completed. I also want to improve on the hospitality factor…I don’t excel in that area 🙂 Thanks for inspiring me to get with it!!

  12. LOVE it! What a worth while goal. “I’m giving myself grace for accomplishing healthful meals and clean laundry – whether or not the laundry is put away.” Good for you! That is wonderful. 🙂 “I really don’t care if my house isn’t spotless when people come. I hope they come to see us and not the house.” Another Amen! Have a super day! BTW, I really like your living room!

  14. I just wanted to say that this is my goal for this year too. I lost my beautiful mother last year and it was very difficult. I was constantly tired & lost all motivation to do anything. As a result my house is now a complete disaster.
My plan this year is to declutter, reorganise and get on top of the cleaning. As I work outside the home I am treating myself to a cleaner every 2nd week just so I don’t get behind. I also have some plans to redecorate.
My next step is to put together a plan of what I want to do & get my men (husband & sons) on board with it all.
Thank you for being an inspiration.

  15. I love the name Ridley!

Also, I have been toying with painting my living room blue for a while…and your picture may have sent me over the edge!! ha!

I can’t wait to hear how you clean more efficiently!

  16. These are great goals! I have many of the same ones :-). Have you ever read Open Heart, Open Home: The Hospitable Way to Make Others Feel Welcome & Wanted by Karen Mains? It’s a pretty good book. I had skimmed it a while back (because I had borrowed it, forgot to read it and had to give it back. suppose I ought to put time management on my goals list this year!!) and plan to read all the way through this year to help me get over my anxiety about the house being perfect! Thanks for sharing your goals :-)!

  17. You have some excellent goals. I could have listed any number of them. I think decluttering, cleaning, and just basically taking care of what I have already been blessed with are going to be some major goals of mine this year!

  18. Great goals! I totally relate to all of them. I spent yesterday cleaning and reorganizing my laundry room and I went to bed with such a great sense of accomplishment. I have 2 girls, work a 40+ a week job and travel for work once or twice a month, so I often feel like my house manages me instead of me managing my house. Your goals have inspired me to put the ones that I have floating in my head down on paper! Good luck! I’ll be following your blog to see how it is going for you!

  19. I love the idea of making your home a sanctuary. That is such a beautiful way to think of it. It makes a person want to come home to rest or just be. Great goals.

  20. I think it’s great to have goals, I love how you made attainable ones and not too many! I am constantly struggling with organization….
I wish you the best at achieving your goals! They are great ones!

  21. That seems pretty cool, honestly. I especially like the ‘play music’ every day part; I love having music going throughout my house. A shame that since I’m into more… chaotic stuff than those I share a house with, I can’t do that all the time.
