For The JOY of Cooking

I usually post a new recipe on Wednesdays and I have some good ones to share in the coming weeks, but I wanted to share a bit of my heart behind my food. Does that sound a little crazy? Let me explain.

I love feeding my family good food. It brings me incredible joy.

It hasn’t always been this way though.

I learned to cook from my Mom, my Granny and my Memaw – all stellar cooks.  Growing up I helped Mom with the housework and my sister helped in the kitchen. Cleaning and decorating was my forte…not cooking.

When I was in high school, I began compiling a recipe card file of tried and true family recipes. My recipe card file {it’s a grape pattern, remember that fad? ;)} has proven to be a wonderful resource for learning to cook and bake in my own kitchen.

When I got married seven years ago, I was working 40 hours a week with a 45 minute commute one way. We were never home and we ate out a lot. I did cook a little bit here and there, but it wasn’t the norm.

Over the last few years, I have fallen in love with cooking. When I cook, I’m a bit like Amelia Bedelia as I add a pinch of this and a pinch of that. Ha! Baking requires much more precision, so it cramps my style just a little.

These days we eat at home 99% of the time which is great for our health and our budget. I confess that I’m not much of an obsessive meal planner, but I try to make sure we have staples on hand to make several different meals.

I’m not sure how it is in other parts of the country, but in the South we celebrate everything with food. Good food. In my way of thinking, I love to celebrate every day life with good, healthy, nourishing food. 😉

And it brings me incredible joy to create, cook, bake and serve this food to my family.

  1. Cooking? Oh, that’s depend on my mood! Sometimes I enjoy cooking for my family and for my friends bur sometimes I cook because somebody has to do it! The problem with me is that I don’t use my imagination when I cook so I prefer the traditional recipes. Not long ago I prepared a chinese lunch and my husband was excited. Nope, I can’t say the same for my daughters!!!

  2. Lately, I like baking better, but it’s because I’ve been stuck in a rut with cooking supper. I feel like we eat the same things all the time, which is probably true considering we live in PA and my husband likes to hunt. It feels like all we eat is some kind of variation of venison and there are only so many different things you can make with venison.
    I’ve enjoyed looking through your recipes for some new ideas and printed out a few 🙂 Thank you!

  3. Yes, Myra it makes my heart so happy to prepare and serve food to my loved ones 🙂 Nothing better than sitting down and hearing “ohh Mommy this is my favorite!” My husband LOVES baking and I love cooking so we enjoy working in the kitchen together…

  4. I love to cook for my family and friends. I understand what you mean about it bringing you joy. I look forward to creating things in the kitchen each day! Now if only I could get such joy about other household tasks, like the laundry!
