Vintage Milk Crate {And Other Finds!}

Until this past weekend, I hadn’t been yard sale-ing yet this season, but I have been searching thrift stores, flea markets and antique shops looking for two specific pieces of furniture for the boy room makeover that I’m working on. I finally found the furniture that we needed last week. Woot!

An estate sale ad {as well as a very sweet three year old} got me out of bed early on Friday morning, so we went treasure hunting. Needless to say it was a good week for thrifty treasure finding!

Y’all. This milk crate made my heart stop. I found it at the estate sale. They wanted $25, but I got it for $20. I’m so royally excited about the possibilities. Aren’t the letters burned into the wood and the metal corners amazing?  Compared to similar vintage milk crates on Ebay, I got a deal and could sell it for triple what I paid for it. Sweet!

I’m going to use it as a centerpiece for an event at my church this weekend. It could also be mounted sideways on the wall to organize magazines. From everything I can find on Google, the milk crate is from Avalon Dairy, the first certified organic milk dairy in Vancouver, B.C. Canada. The dairy began in the early 1900s and is still in operation today. So. very. cool. I would love to know how the crate got from British Columbia to Alabama. 🙂

I found this cute divided metal basket at a thrift shop for one dolla.  It’s perfect for holding vases or jars with flowers or silverware.

I scored this cherry triple dresser with a mirror at the Habitat ReStore for $150. It had just been marked down from $200.  It has no funky smells, no mold and is in great condition with dovetailed drawers. I checked with my friend Shaunna to be sure I made good purchase. With a coat or two of paint and new hardware, this dresser is going to be perfect for storing my boys’ clothes, blankets and probably some toys as well.

Since, our new little one will be booting his big brother out of the crib/toddler bed, I decided on a twin size bed for Ridley.  I saw a lot of cute beds but they just weren’t the one…the price helped me determine that. Haha!  This little red bed came home with me for $80…yes, it has rails too.  It will be getting a new look with new paint as well, but I haven’t completely decided on the color yet. 🙂

So, those are my recent thrifty finds. This week I’m going into full blown boy room makeover mode. I can’t wait to get some painting done…starting with the peachy pink walls!

Have you found any thrifty treasures lately?

I’m linking up to Rhoda’s Thrifty Treasures party!

  1. Myra, I am old enough to be yo mama! I have to tell you that you always brighten my day with your sweet, creative spirit! I love to see all your new ideas! God has blessed you, indeed!

  2. Those are awesome finds!! We need to find some furniture. I think I should start looking in thrift stores. I can’t find what I want @ furniture stores, IF I do they want a bajillion dollars AND my first born.

  3. I love my milk crate! I got one at an estate auction of a dairy family. I have a large enough space between my kitchen cabinets and ceiling that I turned it on its side and use it for a wine rack. I fits in very well with my canning jars and rooster collection! 🙂

  4. I LOVE the milk crate. I seriously need to start thrifting. :o) First stop tho is my parents 200 yr old farm house to determine what I want to make over and re-purpose. Thanks for the inspiration.

  5. Those are great finds! Don’t you love finding treasures for bargain prices? And that little red bed is adorable!

  6. What great finds, and I’m envious that you get to get the go ahead from Shaunna…you know you did good if she approves. That milk crate is fabulous, and I can’t wait to see what you do with the dresser.
    Creatively yours, Lori

  7. I can’t wait to see what you do with these great finds. I went yard saling the other week and picked up three things to be spray painted including a large mirror for the bathroom only $2!

  8. Years ago in McMinnville TN, there was an Avalon Dairy company. That might be where your milk crate came from.

  9. Wow! That is an amazing find! I live in British Columbia and we drink Avalon milk everyday. Would you be interested in selling the crate? I was googling ‘Avalon milk crate’ and found your image. I’m looking for a crate to store our empty glass bottles for return.

Would love to purchase if you no longer use or need it.

Thanks for sharing this cool find!
