Moving Tips & Tricks

/

Good morning, lovely people! If you’ve followed my blog for very long, you probably know that we have moved a lot over the last few years – five houses in six years of marriage to be exact. We have owned one of those houses which was a crazy, insane experience that forced us to learn some very important lessons about ourselves and about reality.

Part of me looks forward to moving again someday because I love getting rid of stuff. The last two moves have required downsizing. Ha! For now, we are happy renters who are dreaming about building a house on a few acres of land within the next few years. We are just waiting and praying that we make good decisions this time.

I’ve been working with Apartment Guide over the last several months, as I’m sure you’ve probably noticed. They have many helpful “tips and tricks” that I know will be beneficial to you if you’re planning a move in the near future.

If You’re Apartment Hunting…

  • ApartmentGuide, one of the most comprehensive apartment search sites on the Internet, allows you to search by price, amenity, and location — including specific locations like colleges and military bases as well as town or city.  How cool is that?!
  • Tweet @aptguide using using the #Officehours hashtag to receive customized help from Apartment Guide on your apartment search.

Moving Tips and Tricks

Apartment Guide provides an array of moving and settling in updates and tips for dwellers in any sized home. To stay one step ahead of your move, check out the Apartment Guide moving checklist.  It’s so helpful!

I feel like I have the “moving process” down pretty well after all our moves in the last few years. However, all of the articles above are great refreshers and probably mention a few things that you may have forgotten about.

  1. Its love and hate for me. I love it because of the excitement of living somewhere, someplace new! I hate it because of the packing and unpacking…I can do without that part

  2. I do NOT enjoy moving. It’s very stressful. I’ve done it many many times in my life, and it’s never fun.

  3. I have moved 4 times in the last 4 years all over the country since I have been married (job changes for the husband) and I love it! It is a new adventure and a good way to clean out all our stuff we don’t need. I am also lucky because 3 of the 4 times we had movers which made EVERYTHING easier!!

  4. I actually love moving. I love going through everything to get rid of stuff. And I LOVE rearranging the new place when we get there and redecorating!

  5. I don’t mind moving. I love apartment/house shopping, and I don’t mind the packing/unpacking. It’s the little things like collecting boxes that I don’t like! haha Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. I have mixed feelings about it… I don’t necessarily love moving, but it forces me to go through all of our stuff and get rid of some. Plus, we are wanting to move to Tennessee, so I would LOVE to move then!

  7. One would think I love moving because of the amount of times I’ve done so (27 times in 27 years, and I’m not an army brat or on the run). But I actually don’t.

Although moving so often does help me maintain a bit of minimalism. It’s easy to figure out if I want to own something based on whether I’d like to carry it around with me for the rest of my life. 🙂

  8. I love moving because it forces you to clean out and I love decorating a new place. I hate moving because it is exhausting.

  9. as much as i hate the process of packing and unloading box after box, there is a small part of me that LOVES moving. i look at it as a new adventure in life! i think i have done it far too many times, but even now, i am still ‘looking’ for the next perfect home, even though i currently love my current home abode! thanks for hosting this giveaway! there are so many things i still need to buy and this would be such a happy blessing! xo

  10. I have moved twice in less than a year time, and it has been very stressful. I am still recuperating.

  11. I don’t enjoy moving. I’m not so great at packing… I’m thankful for all the friends who have pitched in and helped me move multiple times. Glad to have some moving tips!

  12. Love to start packing, and then it just seems like the more I do, the more there is to pack. But then again, I do love finding the perfect home for everything in my new place.

  13. I have a love/hate relationship with moving. In the past two years we’ve moved to 2 different states. We’re in a place that we hope to remain now, but renting so there is sure to be another move sooner or later. Love the excitement of the new area…hate the goodbyes (and DMV trips!!).

  14. I hate moving but it is something I need to do in the near future. Thank you for all you do!!

  15. Its sort of bittersweet – Packing everything up to move and then unpacking is a pain – but its so exciting to have a new place to move into

  16. My hubby and I just moved in April and it confirmed that moving is one of my lease favorite things to do. We only have a 1 bedroom apartment but I have a lot of stuff, especially kitchen stuff! We paid for movers and I will always recommend getting movers to adults. Its one thing to pay your friends with beer and pizza when are in your 20’s but as you get older, your friends’ time is limited so just pay somebody to do the heavy lifting.

  17. I hate the actual moving process, but love living in new locations! 🙂 As a pastor’s wife, we’ve moved 14 times in the last 22 years–not that many different towns, but that many different “homes”. As I get older, I’m getting more tired of moving!!

  18. Moving is something I, like you, know about! We have lived in 5 homes in our 5 1/2years of marriage. Those 5 places have been in 4 states (SC, MA, IL, and KY). Yep, our stuff has traveled LOTS of miles! Interestingly, all of our moves have been downsizing. Our largest home was right after we got married, and our smallest is now–and we have 3 kids now!
We have never owned and are happy to rent a small apartment. Someday, when we settle down somewhere more long-term we will probably buy.
Our last move was with a 2 week old (yes, you read that right!). Easy peasy since I had done it so many times!

  19. I hate moving we moved once after being in our home 26 years and it was stressful and so much work!!!
But I did love building our new house :))

  20. I don’t mind moving but the packing isn’t fun until you get to the new place and get to unpack and make it a “home”.

  21. I actually love moving. I love getting to start over, re-design, re-think a new space. Its refreshing (and sometimes a bit stressful), but can be so much fun!

  22. Moving is definitely a good time to purge..but after 4 moves in 7 years (2 of which have been across country), I am getting a bit tired. 🙂 We are actually packing up right now for our next move in mid-June to the fabulous state of AL! 😉 Can’t wait to be in the South again! 🙂

  23. Luckily I’ve only moved a few times in my lifetime and while it is an enormous job and can be stressful, it’s also exciting to purge and start fresh in a new place!

  24. I love moving – we are moving to a new house in about 4 weeks…so excited!!! Love just purging out the old and moving into a fresh new space to decorate and claim as yours!!!

  25. My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find the majority of your post’s to be just what I’m looking for. Does one offer guest writers to write content for yourself? I wouldn’t mind producing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write about here. Again, awesome blog!

  26. Some parts I like, some parts I don’t. It is a great time to get rid of stuff that is collected over time. However, it can be extremely stressful if you are on a very strict schedule.

  27. I actually love to move because it is fun being in a new home and city. I don’t mind packing so much but I do not like the actually moving the boxes especially if there are stairs involved.

  28. I love moving for the new experience and decorating but hate the preparation of packing and it never fails that something gets broken. We moved 2 years ago cross country from Texas to NJ and it was hard and expensive! I love your blog.

  29. Oh! Moving is no fun, but I’m with you….I LOVE cleaning out and getting rid of stuff!

  30. Dreeeead moving. Hate forcing myself to throw stuff away..(so hard!) unfortunately we r moving soon so i will have to!!

  31. Oh man we have moved so many times during the last eleven years that my husband and I have been together. Almost every year until 3 years ago when we bought our first house. It is funny I love having a house, I like our area and the house but after moving so often for so long being here for 3 years I am now itching to get going. It is taking the form of wanting to get rid of masses of things and really wanting to escape for a while on a trip but I was realizing just the other day that it is because I have been so used to moving so much. However we are staying put (probably until the kids are out of high school, still 13 years away). If I do move I will make sure to check back here for this list of resources for moving a family. 🙂

  32. I hate moving because I’m not organized enough yet. I love your articles. I have started the “purging” process!

  33. It is a love hate for me too. We moved around for a while to Philly, NYC, Denver suburbs and now city of Denver. Moving is great at not living in excess and only keeping what you need, especially in NYC where space is limited. However, the thought of scrubbing 2 places at once and overwhelming feeling right after moving in and there are a gazillion boxes everywhere I certainly don’t miss.

  34. We are moving in 3 months ACK! I am I have already started packing I’m a little OCD like that… so for me while exciting and a bit nerve wracking I love it! and Can’t wait to pack the rest up and label it. I even have a completed floorplan drawn out of where out furniture will go in the new place and each area has a designated number that corresponds to a box. Then each box has a color to determine its level of priority,RED high priority, Yellow medium, Green low.

  35. I don’t love it, it’s stressful! But I also think about the adventure of a new home so it’s not something I hate either…I am glad I don’t have to do it much! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  36. Can I have a love/hate relationship with moving? Lol. We’ve been married for just shy of 3 years and have moved 4 times (about to be 5 later this summer!) in that short amount of time. Moving is stressful, tiring, exciting, and overwhelming. I’d probably hate it if we lived in the same area each time we moved, but since we’ve also moved to three different states that makes it a little more fun! 🙂
Sarah´s last blog post ..Oh hi there!

  37. I hate the actual packing and moving but I love the excitement of a new place and fixing it up.

  38. I liked them on Facebook (although my fb account is under a different email address). thanks for the opportunity to win!

  39. I’m not crazy about moving except for the fact that you usually get a nicer house each time.

  40. We’ve moved 13 times during 16 years of marriage. I think we’re finally done for a while. Thank heaven because I don’t think I could take another move!!!

  41. I absolutely dislike moving however I’ve been moving around the world for too many times to count.

  42. I honestly don’t mind the moving experience. My father was a pastor and we seem to move every 1-2 years. So, I have a lot of experience. It was not until I got married that I developed a system that worked for our family. That being said, we have lived in this house for 14 years…my all-time record for living in a single city, let alone a single house. 🙂

  43. We will be making a cross-country move this summer and I am really looking forward to it. I am happy to be forced to get rid of stuff we are not using and excited to live in a new city!

  44. I love it and hate it. It’s soooooo much work – esp. cleaning the new place AND the old. But I love to pack and organize our stuff. Love to get rid of clutter. Love to organize new spaces.

  45. I absolutely love the newness and adventure of a move, but my OCD side despises the complete chaos on both ends! One perk to this is that I am FAST at packing and unpacking as I cannot bear to endure the clutter period. Thankfully I have been in this home for my longest stretch ever in my adult life…six years! Our youngest graduates high school in another five years, so hopefully I have a few more years before I have to move again!

  46. Ugh. I absolutely hate moving, and I get to do it again here in a few months. But we’re buying this time! And, once the chaos is over, its usually worth it.

  47. I mostly like moving, but it’s always sad to leave a place you’ve enjoyed…Love and hate?? 🙂

  48. I have moved quite a bit in my life. The moving experience had entire new meaning as an adult. I have a love/hate realtionship. I love the new experiences that will happen there. I hate packing up all of the stuff that we have accumulated over the years.

  49. I hate moving! I had to move every year I was in college and then two times after. I now have lived in the same place for almost two years since being married and it is so nice!

  50. i do not like moving; i’ve only done it thrice, but it is just nasty. i’m looking forward to staying in our present home for another 40 yrs. or so if the Lord allows! =)

  51. You know…it is sort of a love/hate relationship. I love the idea of moving into a near area/home etc. But I hate the packing and unpacking of it all! 😉

  52. Actually, I really don’t mind moving because it really does get rid of all the “stuff” we really don’t need. We have not moved in 7 years and 2 kids later = stuff. This summer I plan on taking charge on it and doing away with a-l-o-t! Colleen G.

  53. We recently moved from Alaska to Oklahoma! I loved the move although it was kind of crazy. We loaded our household goods(and vehicles) on a container to be barged to Seattle and then trucked to OK. Then we flew to Dallas and drove to OKC. Here’s the fun part….we flew 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 cats, 1 dog, and 1 gecko and 6 suitcases from AK to TX. Then drove in an SUV from Dallas to OKC! It was a ‘trip’!

  54. I love it – and hate it. We’ve moved a lot too in the last five years and I feel like I’ve got it down to a science. But it’s still crazy and stressful. It is fun to start fresh somewhere though!

  55. I’m kind of weird and like moving – – the whole organizing, scheduling, project managing thing. Our last move (12 years ago!) went flawlessly.

  56. I’ve only officially moved a couple times in my life, but I’ve really enjoyed the fun in it even though it means all of the packing, unpacking, and purging.

  57. I’m with you – the only thing I like about moving is getting rid of stuff while doing it!! 🙂

  58. I do NOT enjoy moving! I’m about to move again soon (as soon as I get a job!) and I never look forward to it!

  59. Moving is something I kind of enjoy. . .it helps you go through things and keep only what you are really using and needing.

  60. Kinda hate moving. After 30 years in our home, we bought two condos…a northern one and a southern one. We were able to furnish both from what was in our home.

    Don’t want to move again.

  61. Luckily I have only had to move once since I was married. Growing up I had to move a lot. I do not like moving. I find it very stressful.

  62. i love moving for getting rid of stuff, but hate it for all the long days and nights of packing

  63. I actually like moving – it forces me to get rid of stuff that I really don’t need.

  64. I really hate moving, but there are some excellent moving, adjusting, and decorating tips in the book Abraham’s Journey, written by my sister-in-law, Char Collie. She and her military husband, along with 3 sons, moved 17 times in 19 years; she was both gifted and experienced in decorating! She passed away unexpectedly in 2011, but the final passage in the book says, “As Christians we are on our way to a better place, and whatever the situation, this, too, will pass. Have a good journey. I will see you at home, in heaven.” That puts everything in perspective for me!

  65. I haven’t moved in forever, but usually moving is for a good thing so I’ll say I love moving 🙂

  66. I love moving! Like you I enjoy cleaning out, giving away and downsizing. We’ve only been in this house 4 years and I’m looking forward to moving again in a few years.

  67. I hate moving! My husband and I were both thrilled when we moved into our house in October. A place we will stay for many years!

  68. I hate moving! We just moved, blah. On a positive note, I am forced to clean and organize.

  69. hate moving…20 years between last two moves…Thank the Lord!

Still not completely unpacked (three plus years ago)

  70. Moving is definitely hard work however in the end it is fun! We are thinking about selling our small house, which we have been trying to maintain but it just needs too much. The idea of renting for a year or two is a happy thought for us right now! So although it’s hard work, it’s a new beginning to look forward to!

  71. I absolutely HATE moving!! Last move for me was about 17 years ago but I am hoping to be moving into a newly built house in about a year! I dread this move but at the same time I’m looking forward to it if that makes sense!?!

  72. I hate moving but I guess I also love it too! The stress of packing and organizing and trying to live amidst the chaos drives me mad but then at the same time the new home and new beginning is exciting and gets my creative side going! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  73. We are a military family and move every three years, so I have a love/ hate relationship with moving. I love moving to a new place with new adventures and cultures to learn. But I hate leaving the routines we’ve created, the rental houses and neighborhoods we call home, and mostly…the wonderful friends we’ve made at each stop.

  74. I love moving! As a 20 year military spouse, I hope I have it down to a fine art. While the goodbyes are always difficult, we are blessed to know we are likely to say hello again to dear friends further down the road. My family and I are embarking on our 11th State to State move in about 6 weeks. Happy Trails!

  75. I definitely hate moving!
Thanks for the chance to win!

  76. I hate moving, but I’m actually looking forward to the next time we get to move. I just hate unpacking…ya, that’s it. We’ve lived in 8 houses/apartments since we’ve been married (15 years), and we owned 3.

  77. i hate the actual moving process, but love the “new” space and re-decorating and re-organizing and all of that. 🙂

  78. I love to move !! like you say, you get rid of quite a bit!! my last move was 11 yrs ago, wish something exciting like a move was coming up:)

  79. Hi Moving to be a love/hate relationship! I love it because I’m usually so excited to settle in to a new place, fresh & clean and organization at it’s peak. Yet I hat it because it is such a HUGE job and takes a major toll on the energy level and the settling process can be overwhelming and daunting… I hate the unsettled feeling!

    Happy Friday!

  80. I love it and hate it. I love the feel of the “new” home, but I hate all of the packing and unpacking.

  81. I have a love/hate relationship with moving. Love moving to a new home and area, but hate all the packing/unpacking that goes along with it.

  82. I hate moving!! I am not big on change to begin with, and the chaos that comes from moving (no matter how hard I try to prepare) makes me insane! I am hoping not to have to move again for the foreseeable future!

  83. I follow them on twitter @anashct3
    Thanks for this lovely giveaway!

  84. I love moving. We are a military family, so that is a good thing! The best part of moving for me is cleaning out and purging things followed by unpacking in a new house and trying to be creative in organizing everything!

  85. I don’t like moving because it’s so much work, but I do like organizing after I move in.

  86. I HATE moving!! Eight months later, I still have boxes to unpack…thinking seriously about just getting rid of them! Good Luck with your move–and thanks for the opportunity to win 🙂

  87. We just moved from a one bedroom apt to a two bedroom. Hated the moving, but loving the extra space!

  88. I hate the process of moving but love purging & becoming more organized (hopefully!) once we’re settled in a new place.

  89. I really don’t like moving, but we’re getting ready to do it now! I loved the extra tips on this post. Perfect for my time of life…

  90. I have only moved once-that was when I moved from NY to MI
away from family…I hated it 🙂
    thanks

  91. Both! I hate packing and unpacking, but I love the adventure of moving to a new place 🙂

  92. I definitely hate moving more than anything especially packing and unpacking yuck! thanks so much we’re actually hoping to move closer to my parents this summer this would definitely come in handy!

  95. We are moving right now! I don’t like the packing part but LOVE unpacking in a fresh new place. It’s like Christmas, opening and unwrapping all the boxes and finding new places to put things.

  96. I have only moved once in my 28 years of marriage and it was when I was 8 months pregnant with our first child, but we were moving from an apartment to our first home. So I LOVED it.

  97. I do not like the packing, but I do love moving stuff in to a new place. Always seems like a fresh start.

  98. Ugh, don’t like moving. We’ve moved more than ten times in less than 5 years of marriage, across the world several times, and have yet to have lived in one house for more than 11 months consecutively. We’re hoping to stay put a little longer this time, but have been given a lot of grace through it all too.

  99. Love moving! I hate junk, it gives me freedom to unload and declutter the space I live in! Love your site, emails, and your trueness to your beliefs! Thanks for the give away!

  100. I actually do not mind moving. My hubby and I bought our first home and get to move June 30th. Yay! Ive already been organizing and de-junking to prepare. Helps relieve some of the chaos moving entails.

  101. I love moving because it means I am moving forward to the next chapter of my life. My next relocation is to nyc to further my education and I couldn’t be more excited! ! 🙂

  102. I also like apartment guide on Facebook .. which is how I first discovered this website!

  103. I love the feel of a new place (or new to me place). Moving part actually stinks but having a newly organized place is fun. My favorite thing to do is to try and figure out what light that each light switch goes to. Nerdy I know but its all part of the experience. My hubby and I have been married for almost 10 years and we will be making our 9th move this October. And yes, we too are downsizing again. Hoping to own again someday, and planning to make better choices this time. Thanks for your blog! 🙂

  104. Thanks for your advice, very helpful!
My recommendation would simply be to choose a good moving company. Many people think that it is easy, however, to find a reliable company like https://demenagement7etoiles.com which will pack and transport your things in time is not so easy
