DIY Stuffed Crust Pizza

/

One day recently, I made my fast and easy homemade pizza with a twist – a DIY Stuffed Crust twist.  I get the craziest ideas sometimes, but when this idea popped into my head I knew it was a keeper.

Yummy!

My secret ingredient is mozzarella string cheese. Amazing, right?!

Make the pizza dough and pat it out on a pizza stone or baking sheet.  Then, lift up the edge of the crust dough and tuck a stick of string cheese under while wrapping it in the edge of the dough, so that the cheese is completely enclosed in pizza dough.  Continue this process all around the pizza dough border until it’s completely stuffed with cheese.  {I used six sticks of string cheese for my pizza.}

Add sauce, toppings and grated mozzarella cheese. Bake as usual.

Enjoy your fabulously easy {and frugal} DIY Stuffed Crust Pizza!  Your family will thank you!

Have you ever made stuffed crust pizza before?

    1. @Jen (Balancing Beauty and Bedlam),

I try to make homemade pizza but how come I can never get the bottom to be crispy before the top starts to burn? I worked at papa gino’s for 9 years and never had any issues. but at home it just doesn’t work for me! UGH! Would love suggestions.

      1. Rena, it may be that your stone is not hot enough?! I cook my pizza on a pizza stone and let the stone and oven both preheat to 450 for a good 30-60 min before I put the pizza on to bake! This is much harder to do in the summer than it is in the winter 🙂 However, I’ve been cooking my pizza on the grill for these hot summer months!!

  1. I make homemade pizza all the time and my son has been begging me to do a stuffed crust. Thanks for the tip on the pizza stone too! I usually make deep dish but HAVE to try it on the pizza stone!

  2. Sounds and looks so yummy….pinned it! Guess I have just changed what we are having for dinner!

  3. I think about using the string cheese everytime I make a pizza. My husband is a cheese fanatic so he would love it. I would think that the whole piece would be too much though. I wonder if slicing the string cheese down lengthwise would make it a little more conservative, but my husband would like the whole thing.

  4. I made this last year for hubby’s birthday (one of his favorite meals out is Pizza Hut supreme stuffed crust pizza), and he loooooved it. I cut the string cheese in half length-wise, though, to use less.

Haven’t made it in quite a while. Thanks for the reminder!

  5. I’ve done this ever since the stuffed crust came out, and my family loves it. I started out using whole sticks, but cut down to half sticks to save money and prevent a choking hazard – lol

  6. Thank you! I have been looking for a non thin/flimsy homemade pizza recipe. And stuffed crust is a great idea!! Anybody have a pizza sauce recipe? I’d hate to ruin this cheezy goodness with store bought pizza sauce.

    1. @Kristina,

Here’s an easy no cook one that I use. I can’t remember where I found it to give credit to the proper person. It makes a big batch and freezes wonderfully.

      Pizza Sauce
      4 cloves garlic
      1 tsp salt
      24 oz tomato paste
      32 oz tomato sauce
      2 tsp sugar
      1/2 tsp pepper
2 tsp oregano or pizza seasoning
      4 Tbsp olive oil
      Dash red pepper flakes, optional

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Makes approximately 6 cups. Freeze for up to 3 months or keep in fridge for up to 2 weeks.

      1. @Ann, Thank you! Now my question is what do you freeze the sauce in? Ziploc bags okay? Or does it need to be tupperware?

  7. For those of us who do not make our own crust , or if you just need to cut corners sometime. Buy Pizza crust with coupon already made.
Take pastry frosting tips and place cheese in funnel, poke hole in crust, pipe in cheese. Easy!

  8. I have been making stuff crust pizza like that for a few years now. Was actually my hubby’s idea and now it’s one of our favorite meals. Do you have your recipe for you homemade pizza crust? It looks wonderful. I just use the canned Pillsbury but might give the homemade a whirl!

  9. Mmm, this sounds good for a treat. We make pizza most Friday nights and watch a movie together. Love the tips in this and the easy pizza post and comments. Do any big family moms have tips on making LOTS of pizza fast? We only have four kids but we go through a lot of pizza and it takes longer to make more than one. Would love tips to speed up the process!

    1. I don’t have a big family…yet, but I came from a family of 7. The things that helped us was to have the peppers and onions and other veggies already cut up and in the freezer, so they could be pulled out and put on the pizza. Also having a bit of an assembly line helped. I frequently make two pizzas at a time when we have company and it really doesn’t take long when I make the dough in two separate bowls at the same time. I hope that makes sense! 🙂 Thanks for your sweet comment Heather! 🙂

  10. I recently read somewhere that if you add about 5-10 minutes to the baking time, you can cook one pizza on the middle rack, and one on the bottom at the same time. Just make sure to switch them in the middle of your cooking time.
I haven’t personally tried it yet, so I’d just watch more carefully the first time to figure out the baking time for yourself.

  11. Made the stuffed-crust pizza tonight. The Italian seasoning proved to be a little overpowering. But otherwise it was great! Will definitely be making this again, just won’t be using the Italian seasoning!

  12. I make homemade pizza every Friday night, and while I like the idea of stuffed crust (I was a kid when Pizza Hut stuffed crust came out, and it was a luxury my parents couldn’t afford.) However, string cheese is far more expensive (per unit) than regular brick cheese, and when you’re already topping it with cheese, I wouldn’t say it’s frugal. Maybe frugal compared to Pizza Hut? Also wondering how health-wise string cheese is. I’m not sure what they do to it to make it so stringy!! Or perhaps prices up here in Canada are just a lot different. No Name Brick Mozza cheese goes for about $11/900g (about 2lb). We love cheese, but I’m careful about our consumption of it, because even if we only eat one brick/week, that’s easily $40 a month.
Sorry to be so negative… I really like the idea – we ARE cheese lovers AND pizza lovers. I’m just not sure it would be worth the extra cost.

    1. Thanks for your comment Karen! 🙂 I can get string cheese at Aldi for less than 3.00 a package including tax. I usually get 2-3 stuffed crust pizzas out of each package, so that’s pretty frugal when considering buying a stuffed crust pizza out. Aldi also sells 4 cups of mozzarella shredded for less than $3. I normally use 2 cups or so on a pizza, so for the cheese usage of a stuffed crust pizza topped with mozz is right about $3. Including crust and toppings, I might be looking at $5-$7 a pizza which is the same as Little Caesar’s hot and ready pizzas but so much healthier. 🙂 I’m not sure how the string cheese is made, but for the occasional use, it’s probably okay. I’ve been to Canada many times and I can definitely say that prices are much higher than Alabama. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! 🙂

  13. Hi Myra,
Thanks for the great tip on stuffing the pizza crust. Never knew how it was done, didn’t think it would be that easy! Made scratch pizza today, stuffed the crust and loaded it with meat and vegetables! Have a great New Years’ and take care.
    Cheers,
