Decorating Hearts With Love

Since I introduced the Put Your House In Order series on The Casabella Project, I haven’t gotten a lot of organizing done…yet. {blush} We were out of town and then I came down with a crazy flu-like bug. I have big plans for organizing my cleaning schedule, menu plans and various cluttered spaces, but today I want to talk about … love.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I’ve been thinking about ways to make my boys {the hubs and our little man} feel loved. You know, having a well-ordered home with everything in its place doesn’t necessarily mean that every one has a happy heart. For me, I love having everything organized because it makes my life less stressful and happy, but for my husband and Ridley it might be a little bit different.

Here are some things that I’m implementing not just for this Valentine’s season, but for the rest of the year to encourage and love on my boys.

  • Learn Their LanguageMy husband loves coming home to a clean house, clean wife {am I the only wife who sometimes forgets to shower?} and dinner on the table.  He’s not demanding at all, but I really do like making him happy, so I’m working at getting it more together.  Truly. It’s not easy, but here’s to progress! 🙂 Ridley thrives on attention – duh! He’s a two year old bundle of energy and boy power.  I love reading to him, throwing balls and doing simple craft projects.  I’ve made it a goal to say “yes” more than I say “no.”
  • Take time – I’m attempting to shut down the laptop more.  It’s so easy to get sucked in and forget about real life.  My boys need me more than my online friends.  It will all be okay if I shut down my computer to spend quality, undistracted time with them.  I want my family to know that they are more important to me than my laptop. Ahem.
  • Make Their Favorite Food – You know they always say that “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.”  Well, I want to get to their heart, so … where’s my apron? 🙂

  • Fill Up Their Love Tank – This point ties in with learning your family members’ love language, but I want to focus a bit more on it.  Whether through loving words, acts of kindness, affirmation or whatever else makes your spouse or children “tick”, do it and keep on doing it.  Overflowing love tanks build self confidence, love and happiness in our homes!
  • It’s The Little Things – I want to go out of my way to find little things that make my boys smile.  From lunch box notes, to extra play time in the bathtub, I’m slowing down and to make these important little things happen!  Don’t you love it when someone does something “small” that makes you smile?

Am I perfect at this? No. Do I fail every day? Yes. Am I going to keep loving on the hearts of my men-folk? You betcha!

What is one way that YOU love on the hearts of your family?

  1. great post!! you’ve listed some of the things that I’m attempting to work on as well 🙂 I love the idea of filling up love tanks – I’m going to think on that to see what I can come up with for my girls and hubby. Thanks for sharing!!

  2. Great post! I’m always telling my husband that we need to keep our kids’ love tanks full all the time. They just act so much better when their tanks are full. Of course, with 3 young kids, it can be a challenge, but I’m working on it:) My husband’s love language is receiving gifts and in our financial situation, it is so hard to keep his tank full. I am not creative in coming up with ways to give gifts to him without having to buy them (besides, I’m not sure he would like those gifts as much. lol) I feel like his tank is always empty:( Maybe I’ll really focus on his close second love language, physical touch. Maybe I can make up the difference:)

Anyway, thanks for the post and the reminder! I’m going to work on that more and definitely work on turning my laptop off more…that ones gets me every time!

    1. Thanks Shaunna! Definitely keeping on praying for your dad. It’s so hard when our loved ones are ill. xoxo

  3. Myra, this post was so encouraging! It is so easy for me to get distracted by all the “things” and “extra-curricular” aspects of life. Thanks for the reminder!

  4. I have just posted something similar – we must have been thinking along the same lines – not that mine was inspired by Valentines (completely forgotten that was coming up!!) … I think just “being there” for your family can make a world of difference. A lot of the time we get so caught up with busyness that our family life suffers. I wholeheartedly agree with the “little things” – they do count. Excellent blog for thought 🙂

  6. I Love this post- thank you Myra! I have 4 boys (3 sons and a hubby) and all 4 have different languages. I love the ‘fill their tank’ analogy- I use it all the time when I explain how we were able to help my middle son go from violent and full of mood swings (some thought he had Sensory Integration Dysfunction) to a love calm little man. His language is touch (he is 5) and I hug and cuddle him, rub his back or let him play with my hair, he is fine. Bliss I tell you.

Anyways, no, you are not the only one who forgets or doesn’t find a moment to shower.. lol I am going to join you in your quest to do the little things- and turn off the laptop a bit more 🙂
