Ballard Designs Knock Off: Silhouette Hurricane Vase

/

I was so excited the other day when the newest Ballard Designs catalog came in the mail. I love browsing through the BD catalog because I get so many ideas and I really like coming up with ways to make things on the cheap. But, you already knew that, right? 🙂

Frosted Silhouette Vase

When my eyes fell on these beauties, I might have gasped just a little. They are beautiful, but for $50 a pop . . . not so beautiful.

Anyway, it made me think about how I could make one myself.  I thought of my dollar store hurricane vases and then I remembered that I had a silhouette picture of Ridley on my computer!

Do you know how HARD it is to get a two year old to be still for a picture?

This picture is blurry, but for making a silhouette it’s just fine.

I worked some magic in my paint.net program {because I’m too cheap for Photoshop, but I envy those who have it} and then I uploaded the image to my Silhouette Studio program. {Just to clarify, the Silhouette Studio program is different from the silhouette that I was making.}  I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to outline the shape, so my brilliant friend Beckie from Infarrantly Creative helped me out!

Once the image was outlined, I was ready to cut some amazing frosted {etching} vinyl!! Squeal!

I got it cut out and transferred to the transfer paper!  This is so exciting!

I pulled out my hurricane vase that I made with gorilla glue, a Walmart vase and a thrift store candlestick and I was ready to apply the vinyl silhouette!

The premium vinyl transferred beautifully!  I adore this vase and I love the little man’s silhouette even more!

I have no idea why, but Spring is making me love yellow, lime, orange and aqua.  Weird, I know. I grabbed some yellow tulips at Publix and added them to my fabulous Ballard Designs Knock Off Vase. Gorg!

I might have swooned…just a little. {blush}

I made this vinyl silhouette and border with my Silhouette Machine that cuts way more than just silhouettes. {Are you confused yet? Ha!} This machine has changed my decorating and crafting life. It makes projects easier and less time consuming. And, now it cuts fabric!  Woot!  In my opinion, it’s worth the investment!

Y’all have a great day!  I’ve taken down my Valentine’s decor and I’m working on Spring! 🙂  Can’t wait to show you!!

  1. This is beautiful! What a wonderful BD “knock off!” It makes me want to try to wrangle Paxton to be still for a second so I can get a silhouette picture of him. Hmm, could be interesting. 🙂

  2. Nice! I have been considering silhouette ideas for my church kidos to make for Mother’s Day…certainly considering this one now since I have a Silhouette! I’m wondering how long it would take to trace the profile for 8 pictures!

  3. I must say – that is amazing!!! The profile pic is so adorable!! You’re so creative! Would you like to come to my house next? I can’t think of ANY decorating ideas on my own, whatsoever. We just completely re-did the inside of our house, so I have bare walls everywhere and have NO CLUE what to do!!
I also have to say, I’m so so so so jealous of your “spring”!!! We have 8 (EIGHT!!!!!!!!!) INCHES OF SNOW!!!!!! I am SOOOOO over winter!!! 🙁
Maybe this spring you speak of will give me inspiration. Le sigh.

  4. Myra – I like the shape of your vase better than the catalogue one! Very nicely done and so meaningful with your darling boy on it!

  5. I’m wondering if there’s anyway to make this without the machine you have or a Cricut? Any ideas? I want one of my 2 year old sooo bad! He has the CUTEST profile ever!!!

  6. That is beautiful!!! I love BD, too. I haven’t seen one of their catalogs in a couple of years. I might have to go request one… 🙂

  7. You might want to consider cutting that adorable profile as a stencil and using etching cream to make a permanent heirloom that your boy can point to someday. I have been etching glass all weekend using my Silhouette to cut the vinyl and it is so easy and so successful that I am just in love with the technique. (I have just “named” all my casserole dishes and glass baking pans so I’ll be sure to get my own back after a potluck dinner!)

  8. i’m so glad you linked this up to the SPRING FLING.

this really is a super idea. i need to learn how to upload an image to my silhouette. i think there’s a BIG learning curve to the machine. i just need to sit down & learn it.

thanks for linking up to the SPRING FLING!

    happy weekend.

  9. What a great knock-off! Just darling! I haven’t tried paint.net. I have PS Elements, but only know how to do a few things with it.

btw, you’re not crazy! I’m loving the citrus colors with turquoise this spring. Guess I’m a year late with turquoise, but I don’t care!

Happy SU Sunday! Stopping by from FB Crafterminds!

  10. Girl, you are brilliant!! I absolutely love it…I am going to have to checkout so many of these links…paint.net and the silhouette included. Too cheap for Photoshop too…and have been trying to figure out whether to Cricut or Silhouette. Love your Vase…just beautiful…and personal!!!!

  11. I got a cute glass piece from a thrift store to keep my little girl’s bracelets in and wanted to put her silhouette and name on and was wondering if there’s anyway to do this besides using a sihouette machine….
