Homemade Pennant Birthday Banner {Tutorial}

/ /

A couple of weeks ago, I worked feverishly to get our new-old house ready for Ridley’s birthday party. Since we just moved, I had to work some magic late at night to have the living room, kitchen and breakfast area {oh, and the bathroom too} ready for company.

I kept decorations simple with streamers and a pennant birthday banner.  Food and gifts make the best decorations anyway. Last year I made this banner which was a great hit, so this year I changed it up a bit {variety is the spice of life, right?}

{simple decor}

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Cardstock
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Rubber Cement
  • Scissors
  • A Silhouette Machine or Stencils or Printer
  • Hole Punch
  • Ribbon

Cut pennants out of cardstock.  I got 6 pennants out of each 12×12 piece.

Prepare your letters. I used my fabulous Silhouette machine and had these letters cut out in under two minutes.  {totally made my day!}

Cut scrapbook paper pennants slightly smaller than the cardstock  pennants.  It would actually be easier to cut the scrapbook paper pennants first.  Obviously, I’m really smart and efficient {sarcasm} and decided to do it the hard way. Ha!

Arrange the pennants in order to make sure everything is correct. I added “spacer pennants” between the words, so it wouldn’t read “happybirthdayridley.”  Then glue everything (cardstock, paper and letters) together.

Punch holes in the upper corners of the each pennant and then string the ribbon through.

Hang it up and you’re done! 🙂

It’s time to party!

This banner cost me under $5.00 to make!  Now that’s a reason to party!

  2. Myra, meeting you at Blissdom was a real blessing for me. You’re all the things I’m not–well-organized, confident, good at planning, etc. etc. It was inspiring to watch you!

    But more than that, you were so immensely kind. And you have one of the most beautiful smiles I’ve ever seen. I’m so glad to have seen that smile in person! 🙂

  4. How did you cut the 12×12 page to get 6 pennants? I have been baffled for sometime on how to cut pennant/triangle shapes for my sb pages as well. Geometry wasn’t my stongest subject (duh!) Any advice/tutorial would be great. Thank You!!

    1. Hey girl! It’s hilarious that you asked this tonight. I’m working on a Patriotic Pennant banner and JUST (like 2 minutes ago) took a picture of how I cut the pennants out. Will be posting on Thursday! 🙂

  5. Hi, my son’s birthday is coming up and I wanted to make him a banner and I came across your blog! It was just the instruction I needed! Just curious, where is the best place pricewise to get the supplies? Thanks!

    1. Yay!! I’m so glad you found me! 🙂 My favorite place is Hobby Lobby when they run items on sale or with a printable coupon they have online. 🙂 I hope that helps!

  6. Thanks! I just got back from Hobby Lobby with all the supplies. My son and I are making this for my husband’s birthday. We have always used the same store bought banner. I thought this would be a great occasion to debut a new banner.
