Friday Fails – Total Ditz Moments

Photobucket

Surely I’m not the only woman walking around with mommy-brain, baby-brain, teenager-brain, right? Welcome to the insane asylum party where we give up self-respect and reveal our failures. It’s a laugh fest! :)

This past Saturday night, I left Ernie and Ridley watching a “riveting” football game while I drove to Publix for a few groceries. I rarely get out by myself at night, so I relished the silence.

On my way home, I kept noticing how dark the highway was…it was SO dark.

By the time I was halfway home I just couldn’t imagine why in the world the streetlights weren’t working.

Then I realized.

I forgot to turn the car lights on!!! {total ditz moment}

Duh! Thankfully there were no cars (or cops) around! Ha!

Then on Sunday morning, I woke up semi-early to make a dessert for Sunday dinner. As I mixed the ingredients for Sweet Potato Pecan Bars, I tried to clear the sleepy cobwebs from my brain and eyes.

Then, when I was about to spoon the batter onto the crust, I decided to double check the recipe…

Then I read with shock that the recipe said 1 1/2 T. flour.

I had added 1 1/2 CUPS of flour!!!

Somehow, after adding a can of pumpkin, more sugar, cinnamon and chocolate chips (don’t they solve everything?), I managed to salvage the dessert.

Moral of the story: Don’t bake before coffee, breakfast casserole or a green smoothie!

Have you ever driven in the dark without your lights on? Have you ever totally misread a recipe?

I once made fresh blueberry pie. The recipe said 1/4 CUP of salt. I can’t even explain why I didn’t question it…too long of a story. But I made it and my guests were horrified at first bite! It was supposed to be 1/4 teaspoon. In my defense, the recipe said CUP!

Me! Just this week, too! Yesterday I was baking pumpkin bread and messed up twice. Added baking soda instead of powder and didn’t realize my mistake until I saw it said to add baking soda! I was able to scoop it out and salvage it.

HA! Totally wonderful to know that other women do the same goofy things I do. :) Congrats on salvaging your pumpkin bread! :)

I’ve forgotten my lights before, because I usually don’t have to turn them on. I have headlights that come on automatically when it gets dark enough. But when I take my car in to have it serviced, they tend to turn off the auto feature and I don’t realize it until I am in the same situation as you.

Wow. I’m trying to get past the line where you said you left Ridley with Ernie during the football game! I think my husband would file for divorce if I left him with one or both of our children during Alabama football. Especially, when the game was like it was Saturday! :) What’s it like to go to the store without a kid in tow? I can’t remember…. lol. And to answer your question, NO! you aren’t alone. I have three children in my home now under the age of three. I can’t remember anything!

Ha! Well, Ernie’s pretty amazing. He’s an Auburn fan, but cheers for Bama except one game out of the year. :) Going to the grocery store is alone is so peaceful…wonderful silence! :) Glad to know that I’m not alone! :)

You are definitely not alone! Here are a few of my recipe disasters:
~ I misread a gingerbread cake recipe and reversed the amount of soda/powder and ended up with a sticky, nasty mess in my oven because of it.
~ I once put 3 T. of yeast in rolls when it actually called for 3 t. They ended up being GIANT and super yeasty tasting. We threw them out. :(
~ I also melted the butter for some brownies and left it sitting in the bowl in the microwave but didn’t discover it until they were almost finished baking. I wondered why the batter seemed so stiff… They got thrown out also.

Also, I don’t go out much at night and I could totally see myself forgetting the lights.

Oh I have a really good one to share, but I always forget to write these stories on Fridays! FAIL! 😀

Let’s just say it includes jumper cables in my own driveway.

Ha Ha! This totally gave me more energy to get up and get stuff done this afternoon! I’m planning to share with my husband when he gets home…so he knows I’m not the only one who does stuff like this!

Most recent epic fail: removing bread from the oven with one potholder and one bare hand–and grabbing the loaf pan with BOTH hands. Bad plan. :)
