Earth Day, Green Giant & A Giveaway!

When I was a sophomore in college, I wrote a research paper on organic farming.  I became quite passionate about both organic farming and taking care of the resources that we have.  I’ve been inspired to go papertowel-less, so when our paper towels are gone, they are gone. {Sorry, honey!}

We should do everything we can to protect the earth’s resources. The basis for my position on being a good steward of our planet is this:

“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof” Psalm 24:1

Ultimately because I love God and I believe that He created our world, I want to take care of the wonderful resources that He has given us. Anyway, that’s my position on “Earth Day” which is right around the corner on Thursday, April 22nd! {ahem}

When My Blog Spark contacted me to do a review of Green Giant, I jumped at the opportunity!  We love Green Giant frozen vegetables!  When they are on sale and I have coupons, I always stock up.  The Green Giant Frozen Sugar Snap Peas are our favorite.

On top of having awesome food products, Green Giant is always finding ways to care for the environment, including:

  • Switching to more earth-friendly paperboard to package frozen vegetables
  • Packing vegetables in smaller, lighter cans, so it takes less fuel to deliver them to supermarket shelves
  • Teaming up with growers to install a more efficient irrigation system that can reduce water use by more than a million gallons a year.

Green Giant is currently working to encourage greener farming practices near the Root River, one of Minnesota’s best trout streams.  I’m thankful for Green Giant’s efforts in sustainability.

Green Giant and My Blog Spark, sent me this fabulous “Seeds of Change” gift pack including a : re-usable grocery bag, a set of three bamboo utensils (LOVE these!), a coupon for free Green Giant frozen veggies and a mini herb garden!

I love my mini herb garden!  My brown thumb hasn’t killed the seeds off yet.  All three herbs are coming up and I’m very excited!

  1. I’d love to enter your giveaway, please.
We are about 1/2 way through planting a large vegetable garden, as usual, but peas aren’t in the ground yet. 😉
We reuse, upcycle and recycle whenever possible by buying used and fixing it up and donating items to thrift stores or recycling metals instead of filling up landfills.

  2. We love the corn and cut green beans!
I have thought of going paper towel-less here, too, but the thought scares me a little. I’m still thinking about it.

  3. We recycle every week and we are going to plant an organic garden this year. We are also considering switching to linen napkins rather than paper towels but I haven’t bought them yet. We also use all natural cleaners in our home.

  4. we won’t be doing anything special for earth day, other than the normal everyday things we do to take care of God’s earth! 🙂

  5. My kids love corn on the cob with everything from burgers to enchiladas to spaghetti and meat balls. We switched from paper towels to rags about 2 years ago and have an overflowing shoe box full of them. The hardest part of the switch was to train my children to grab those and not dish towels to clean up messes; my husband was great about it as well as switching to cloth napkins.

  6. This is a great giveaway! I love using the cloth bags for shopping and the wooden utensils would be great for cooking!

  7. We don’t have anything extra planned for Earth Day, but maybe I can find some seeds to plant with my 4 year old daughter; I know she would love it!

  8. Don’t think I have a chance to win ..wow…what a response!

I just love the man himself, “Mr. Green Giant”…lol!! and we love all of the Veggies, so convenient and healthy.

This Earth Day I plan to do a garbage pick-up around our school. think the students are getting involved too.

The earth IS the Lord’s, and we should look after it whilst living here.

Blessings and love for a happy Momday Myra, oops, typo, but I will leave it!!

  9. I love the steam green beans! Steam them the saute with almonds and onion salt and garlic powder..,yum!

  10. We are slowly starting to transition over to reusable shopping bags! It’s going to take a while to get enough for our big shopping trips, but never the less we are tackling it!

  11. My favorite Green Giant product is their Healthy Weight blend of veggies in a box. It is a blend of sliced carrots, sugar snap peas, black beans, and edamame and it is Mmm, Mmm good! (Oh wait, that’s Campbell’s Soup’s slogan).

  12. My favorite Green Giant vegetables are the brussel sprouts in butter sauce! No one else in my family will touch them, so when they are on sale for $1/box and I have coupons…I stock up and they are all mine!

  13. What I’m doing to go green…we went “paperless” in the kitchen about two weeks ago and we don’t miss the paper towels at all! They key for me was having two kinds of cloth towels (I bought tons of them at Big Lots) and having them handy at all times. I have two colors: one for cleaning babies and food, the other for cleaning dishes, counters, floor spills, etc. I have a large stockpile of paper napkins but once they’re gone, they’re gone for good too.

  14. It’s good to hear about large manufacturing companies taking steps to be more eco-friendly! I buy Green Giant for my family ALL the time. It helps me in preparing a quick dinner after a long day of work. We especially love the Valley Fresh Steamers. So easy!

Our family has also taken up recycling, changing out our lightbulbs, using cloth rags for cleaning, no paper plates and using re-usable bags for grocery shopping.

  15. We love all the frozen veg, and always stock up when there is a sale also! Our favorite is probably just the regular frozen peas(no sauce)
They are sweet enough to enjoy with nothing added. Sometimes I send them in my kids lunch frozen, and by lunch time, they are a perfect sweet finger food snack! Yummo

  16. We have quit buying bottled water for over 6 months now. We are now recycling all our newspapers and magazines

  17. Love this giveaway! I love the all the Green Giant vegetables- especially the broccoli and mixed veggies. I always have a bunch in the freezer for a quick and easy veggie to add to our meal.

  18. I have made a conscious effort to make green changes in our home. We now take advantage of the free recycling our town provides with trash service, and I am beginning the transition to reusable grocery bags. This year we are going to start a compost pile and try our hand at an organic garden. I know all the little changes will add up in the long run!

  19. We already compost, recycle, and use cloth napkins. Think we will make a rain barrel for earth day. We made one last year, but could use one on the other side of the house!

  20. Our family recycles newspaper, magazines, almost all paper products and boxes. We also quit using paper towels and paper napkins (switched to cloth). Use vinegar to kill yard weeds instead of chemicals also.

  21. I here such herbs grow well in the motherland. Switzerland would love to have your herbs! 🙂 By the way, nothing like learning about major home changes via a blog post.

  22. We love the steamers line of veggies…so easy to prepare and a healthier choice than some others…thanks for bringing light to Earth Week!

  23. Our family loves Green Giant Brussel Sprouts. They are so easy to cook and always come out tasting great!! Thanks!

  24. My two sons and I have been taking weekly walks to clean up garbage from the streets of our neighborhood…we also have been enforcing a conscious effort to turn off all lights and electronics when not in use!

  25. We reuse bags; i.e. grocery bags, sandwich bags, brown bags, etc. We also are collecting enough reusable cloth grocery bags so that we will have enough to do all our grocery shopping with those instead of the plastic ones at the store. Thanks!

  26. We eat a lot of the corn and broccoli. I’m getting rid of paper towels and paper napkins, too, but I’m having to sort of drag my husband into it.

  27. I have loved Green Giant since I was a kid 🙂 I have two favorites: sweet peas and brussel spouts in butter.

I’ve been a fan of organic and sustainable farming for quite some time and I completely agree with you that we need to be stewards of this beautiful planet God entrusted to our care. I like the idea of going paper towel-less. Might have to look into doing that myself.

  30. The Frozen Green Peas! They are my MVV…Most Valuable Veggie, adding appropriate color and sweet flavor to my Italian soups, Asian stirfrys, and Southern comfort foods. And they also taste great “raw” in a salad. What other veggie can do all that?! 🙂

  31. We love using nontoxic and biodegradable cleaners in our home- all purpose cleaners, window/glass cleaners, dish soap, dishwashing detergent and laundry soap! We will continue to do this and more for Earth Day this year.

  32. It’s a toss up in our house between e-vil broccoli in cheese sauce and brussel sprouts in butter sauce(I had to nag to get the spouse to eat them since he hated them when he was younger. Guess what? He LOVES them now).

  33. My family loves the snap peas the best. We plant a huge garden an can as much as possible to cut down on the food bill.

  34. I tried a frozen Green Giant product, an Immunity Blend of veggies. I just looked on their site, it may have been a Healthy Weight blend, they dont’ have the veggiese listed for each. Anyway it had red and yellow peppers and broccoli, and some others, I thought it was very good.

    Thanks!

  35. We love the carrots and the peas in butter sauce. They’re wonderful!! We recycle everything we can here. My three year old son is even learning to recycle things.

For Earth Day, we’re going to let my son plant a tree in the backyard and then clean up the neighborhood park.

  36. I’d love to have my name added to your great giveaway! Thanks so much!

My husband and I really love the Green Giant Broccoli and Cheese… Sooo yummy!!

We have just started using our own carrying totes for shopping..

    Blessings,
    ~Lynn

  37. We have begun recycling all paper at our house and have switched to mostly paper towels/washclothes/napkins.

  38. I love the frozen corn on the cob it brings back wonderful memories
of summer when its cold outside. We recycle everything we can at
our house. I just took the recycle bin to the street and it was full. The trash that is going to the landfill only had a few items.:)

  39. My family knows green giant as “green box” sides. I love the green bean casserole as an easy lunch.

  40. We leave less of a carbon footprint by regularly recycling everything possible. We also use CFLs, Energy Star appliances, and reusable shopping bags. We combine driving trips to save mileage — and turn things like lights off when not in use.

  41. I haven’t gotten their frozen veggies in a while but the broccoli with cheese sauce looks yummy:)

  42. We recycle, reuse plastic sandwich and freezer bags and tin foil, and I’m also really debating going paper towel-less.

  43. My favorite green giant product would be the frozen green beans! I add onions, butter and bacon to the green beans and they taste just like fresh picked from the garden!

  44. What we are doing to save the earth — instead of buying new clothes for my kids when they outgrow their old ones, we have clothing swaps with other families. Kids get a new, free and earth-friendly wardrobe.

  45. To be good stewards of the earth, we’re recycling, using reusable shopping bags, and planting a garden for the second year in a row. 🙂

  46. I love Green Giant’s Heart Healthy blend. I recently tried it at a friend’s and enjoyed it.

  47. I keep my reusable bags in my car at all times. I get them right back there after I unpack things from a store so they are always there and ready to use.

  48. We have a reusable “recycle bag” on the door of our kitchen that leads outside. We fill it up with paper and plastic then bring it out to the recycle bin once it is full. It surprises me how packed our recycle bin can get with every other week pickup!

  49. I know this is horrible, but I grew up on Green Giant Corn Frozen in Butter Sauce. I know. Loaded with fat. What can I say!?!

  50. We are trying to cut down on disposable items, from paper towels to ziploc bags to plastic bags, and to instead use reusable versions.

  51. We recycle, use reusable bags and try to save on water and electric.
Thank you, TMartin26 at aol dot com

  52. We recycle, reduce, reuse and use reusable bags. My 4 1/2 year old daughter is really into helping sort the recycling.

  53. I am trying to make our household more green, I keep reusable grocery bags in my car & use them everywhere I go. I also started sneaking them into my boyfriends routine. Instead of him taking a plastic lunch bag with him to work I now put his lunches & extra stuff for work in the reusable bags. Its saved us from hundreds of plastic grocery bags.
