Losing the Baby Weight!

/

This has been a hard topic for me to think about…much less write about. I have been trying to lose my baby weight for 9 months. But I’ve finally hit a milestone of 40 lbs!!!!!! So, I feel like I’ve accomplished something and I’m not so “ashamed” of my baby weight gain. I grew a baby for crying out loud, so there’s nothing to be ashamed of anyway.

Here’s a bit of my story: I gained 70 pounds (gasp!) with my pregnancy. I’m not sure why I gained so much. I wasn’t pigging out or eating everything in sight. I did have a crazy craving early on–Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich. That’s all I wanted to eat and everything else was making me gag, so I had Wendy’s Spicy Chicken for lunch every day for probably 2 weeks. Now, I can’t stand the thought of eating that! Ha! But I know that sandwich is not what made me gain 70 lbs!

At 12 weeks, I woke up early one morning with the most dreadful pain I have ever experienced. Yes, it was definitely worse than childbirth. Okay, yes, I had an epidural after 40 hours of non-stop back labor. But still, this pain was horrible. Prince Charming took me to the ER and they almost immediately gave me morphine. It helped a little, but I worried about my baby.

To make a very long story a little shorter, they found a 12 cm cyst (grapefruit size) on my left ovary. Hence the incredible pain. My ob-gyn mentioned surgery a couple times, which I did not want. And she told me to immediately stop working out. So, I went from working out 3x a week to nothing…and bedrest for 2 weeks. This sudden change in my activity level “did it” for my metabolism. (I changed doctors halfway through my pregnancy to an ob that I love and completely trust.)

After I saw a certain “number” on the scale at the doctor’s office, I started standing on the scale backwards because I didn’t want to see. I just couldn’t handle the HUGE numbers! It was awful! The dr. wasn’t concerned at all because my blood glucose was perfect. I’m so glad that I didn’t know what my weight was right before I delivered Ridley…until AFTER I lost some of it! Ha!

After I got the doctor’s clearance at my 6 week check up, I started working out at Curves 3+ times per week. I also occasionally do Tracy Anderson’s Post Pregnancy Workout DVD (kicks my rear and my abs!) and the Chicks N Chickens workout.

I love riding my bike (ahem, hubby…please air up my tires!) and pulling Ridley around in the bike trailer. This time of year is too gorgeous to stay inside!

I don’t have any good before and after “body shots”, but you can tell that I’ve lost weight in my face. My cheeks aren’t quite so chubby and I don’t have such “jowls” anymore!

Before and After
40 Pounds Lost!
In September Prince Charming and I joined The Biggest Loser contest that is taking place where he works. Our team name is the Flab Fighters! Ha! I’ve been off sugar for one month and I feel SO much better!

At first I cut all snacks and just ate 3 meals a day. Now when I snack, I love to have fruit and cheese, veggies and hummus or yogurt. It has made a huge difference for me! I try to workout every day, but it seems like something always comes up, but I am working out at least 3 times per week (Curves or at home).

The more I work out, the more I love it. When I was just starting back, I hated working out, but it’s getting better! 🙂 The reward is well worth the pain. No pain, no gain! Ha!
Oh, and when I get down to my pre-pregnancy weight I will never again complain that I’m fat!
Recently, I received this “Get Strong & Healthy” gift bag containing a wonderful yoga mat with a carry bag (that I’ve used for my “at home” workouts), a coupon for a free Yoplait yogurt and Nancy O’Dell’s new book Full of Life: Mom to Mom Tips I Wish Someone Had Told Me When I Was Pregnant.

I love Yoplait yogurt! There are so many different, delicious flavors to choose from! I can easily satisfy a “sweet” craving with a Yoplait.
Full of Life is an easy-to-read book that is perfect for all new mommys-to-be. I didn’t agree completely with Nancy on a few issues, one being the early testing for chromosomal defects.
(Tangent: When I was asked about this test, I was first horrified and then angry because without a doubt we would keep and love our baby no matter what. It just made the reality of abortion so much closer to home for me. It’s something that I can’t even imagine considering or even worse, dealing with the aftermath in my own heart. Off soapbox, now!)
Nancy does bring out many interesting points especially those things that people don’t talk about, but should. She is funny, honest, open and very up-front about issues from conception to breastfeeding. A very interesting, comforting and informative read!
If you would like to win a gift bag like the one pictured above, please just leave a comment saying what you and your family are doing to be healthy, especially during this flu-ish, nasty season.
*Note: Please be sure to leave your e-mail address in your comment IF it is not easily accessible in your blogger profile. I will be contacting two winners via e-mail. If I have not heard back from the winners within 24 hours I will draw again.

  1. You go girl! You're doing great, just hang in there and stay with it! We love to have to come visit at Curves!!

  2. Ooohhh Myra, I would so love this gift bag. There isn't anything in it that I wouldn't love! 🙂 Here are the things we're doing to stay healthy: 1. For the last two months, my hubby has been working out almost every morning at the gym (hubba hubba)!
    2. We rarely ever eat out anymore. It's healthier and more cost efficient for me to cook! We love our veggies, and we want our son to love them too! (I found out that by talking to Caedmon about the veggies I'm cooking makes him more interested in them when supper rolls around.)l
    3. The area I want to improve is my daily workout at home. I have good intentions, but before I know it the day is over and I haven't completed the first squat!

So there you have it. 🙂 By the way, you are doing an amazing job! Way to go girl!!!

  3. Good for you! You must be so proud of your accomplishments! You have done a fantastic job – now give me your will power. No, really…

What are we doing as a family? We are trying to be more organized in meal planning so that, with our busy lifestyle, fast food is not the only option. If it is the only option we have, we are chosing Subway or Extreme Pita.

I have been doing an exercise program with my fellow worship team peoples called Turbojam (the program not us – grin)and drinking a lot of smoothies for breakfasts…and we all use wii fit.

This could be longwinded; I think you can see where we are heading…

  4. Wow! Good for you, you look great!

We are big on washing hands and using antibacterial sprays when we are out and about.

We are also trying to eat more healthy, home cooked meals as opposed to fast food, that often happens when you are running about. Makes our bodies feel a lot stronger.

  5. Great job, Cuz! 🙂 You do look great! And I'm not just saying that to win the prize either! ha! We will be attempting to change our lifestyle very soon, as soon as we can wade through the chaos of our new location! ha ha But I am already very strict with our junk food and sugar intake, and I cook nearly every meal. We only have 1 "Cheat night" a week where we have pizza and popcorn or some other junkish food just for fun. Otherwise we are very well-balanced! Lol

  6. Great job on the weight loss! You really do look great!! Keep up the great work! (Although I think you look great the way you are and there is no need to lose more)

  7. Yay! Congrats on losing 40 pounds and especially being successful saying no to sugar…that would be a huge challenge!

I would love to win that book…I'm sure I could learn a lot from it! And I have been wanting a yoga mat…both for pregnancy workouts and definitely postpartum workouts once the baby arrives and its my turn to start trying to lose the baby weight!!

  8. You look awesome, sis! And I'm not just sayin' that, I mean it! I'm very proud of your hard work. I'm surely going to need some encouragement after I have my baby. lol!
What we do to try to stay healthy: Jacob works out about 3 times a week at the gym, I work out at curves 3-4 times a week and I walk 2 miles about everyday. We also take tons of garlic and vitamin C…so far we haven't caught the flu, colds, or nastyness going around.
    Great giveaway!! 🙂

  9. way to go!! 🙂 we're trying to get more exercise, wash our hands and get at least 8 hrs of sleep each night!

  10. Great job, Myra!

What we do: Well, we are in the midst of a huge move (1,000 miles away!) so things are a bit topsy turvy, but….

We generally eat very few if any sweets at home. We eat lots of veggies, and fruit is our main snack.

Very interested in the book and mat.

  11. You are absolutely beautiful, before and after!

I love Curves. Worked out 3-4 times a week when we lived near one.

  12. You are doing so great with your weight loss! Someone told me once that it takes THREE YEARS for your metabolism to return to it's pre-pregnancy state. Dude, that's a LONG time! My girls are nearly 2.5 and about a year ago I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but it was so hard to stay that way, and I now I have 20 lbs. to lose again. Sucks.

To combat the bulge, we bought a Wii. And so far it's certainly helping me stay motivated about getting my exercise! We've had it for 2 weeks now, and I'm using it at least 3-4 times per week.

Also to combat colds/flu this year I'm carrying my own pen and I'm NOT using anyone else's!!!

  13. I gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant (15 yrs. ago) and I didn't lose it for a while. It doesn't come off as easy as you put it on. It will all come off in time. Sounds like you are doing a great job. Congrat on those 40lbs. That is wonderful.

  14. First off, Congratulations! What an accomplishment! I'm stuck and need a nudge!
    And yes, sign me up!

  15. I think you look great and kudos to you and hubby for commiting to the weight loss. Rachel turned me on to Jillian Michael's 20 minute shred. It is tough but only 30 minutes.

  16. uh that should have been 20 minutes. I'm still recovering from being sick with the NOT flu and bronchitis. That's my story and I'm stickin to it

  17. Congratulations on your weight loss success. I wish I could say we are doing more to be healthy right now but since I am about 14 weeks pregnant and have had some issues with bleeding/spotting I haven't been as active as I would like to be. Although we aren't eating as much junk-type food. I'm just not craving it right now. I do eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Hopefully the issues will resolve soon so that I can feel better and be more active.

  18. Good job!! My family and I eat out a lot less and we walk our dogs more often as a family 🙂 I love this weather…it's perfect for walking outside!

  19. Hello,
Hope this works this time. I have tried to send a message twice. I think it's me. haha. First of all you are beautiful, with or without the extra lbs. I need to lose about 20 lbs myself. Looking forward to some good walks with our babies. Hand washing is a big deal in my house. Keeps the GERMS away! Love you keep up the good work Myra! 🙂

  21. Congratulations on your weight loss. We bike or walk after dinner in the evening. During flu season we wash and sanitize a ton to keep the germs off.

  22. That is AWESOME!! I am offically going to start my postpartum weight loss on Nov. 1st. I just bought a DVD and use Spark People. Here's hoping it comes off!!

  23. Congrats on your weight loss…I gained 50-60 pounds with each of my three kids…and I know how hard it is to lose!!

I have been spraying Lysol and having the kids wash their hands everyday, as soon as they get home from school to keep healthy!

    mdlangmead@gmail.com

  24. That is awesome, 40 pounds is a great milestone! We try to eat “healthy” and I stay somewhat active chasing the kids around all day, but we will definately be doing more outside as the weather permits! What an inspiring post. BTW, good luck to you and your hubby’s team.

  25. How inspiring!!! As for me and my family, we are doing a monthly meal plan of much healthier foods than we have been eating. My husband and I are exercising more and for the kids, we have greatly limited the tv time and encouraged playing outside more often. I have 50 pounds to go, which seems overwhelming at times, but I am determined to loose it!
